Specialty Semiconductor ProcessThin moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA's only process-tool business earns an 11% segment margin, a quarter of what process control earns.
Specialty Semiconductor Process is the one KLA business that makes process tools rather than inspecting them, and it earns thin margins. Its products brought in $502.5 million in fiscal 20261, 3.7% of revenue2; with its services, the segment's revenue was $584.1 million3.
The 10-K describes it as selling "advanced vacuum deposition and etching process tools" to "manufacturers of MEMS, radio frequency communication chips, and power semiconductors"4. It came with the Orbotech acquisition of February 20195, which is why the fiscal 2019 figure, $129.9 million, covers only part of a year6.
Product revenue rose to $269.7 million in fiscal 2020 and $492.1 million in fiscal 202378, then moved sideways: $470.6 million, $517.2 million and $502.5 million in the three years since9. In fiscal 2026 the segment's revenue "decreased slightly by 1%" on "lower customer investments and reduced product sales in China"10.
Customers buy these as capital equipment, like KLA's other tools.
The segment reports its own profit. Segment profit was $64.6 million in fiscal 2026, 11.1% of revenue1112, down from $99.0 million in fiscal 202513. Its gross margin was 47.7%, against 56.0% in fiscal 202114. The segment spent $59.4 million on research15.
The outlook depends on power and radio chips, markets tied more to cars, phones and industry than to AI. The June 2026 quarter brought in $159.7 million16.
The segment's gross margin has drifted down from its fiscal 2021 level: 56.0% in fiscal 2021, 53.1% in fiscal 2022, 51.9% in fiscal 2023, then 53.5%, 51.8% and 47.7%17. Segment revenue barely moved over the last three years, from $543.4 million in fiscal 2023 to $584.1 million1819, so the lower margin reflects price or mix rather than a fall in volume.
Most of the segment's revenue is new tools. Product sales of $502.5 million were 86% of segment revenue of $584.1 million in fiscal 20262021, and the segment's research spending of $59.4 million was about 10% of its revenue22. It is a small capital-equipment business run inside a much larger one.
This line would earn its place only if its margin recovered. Segment profit below $50 million in fiscal 2027 would say the business was not worth its research budget.
Segment profit $64.6M in FY2026 from $99.0M.
Whether the Orbotech process-tool business earns its keep; profit below $50M would say it does not.
