Foundry and Logic Are Four-FifthsWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Four-fifths of KLA's process control systems revenue comes from foundry and logic, where the smallest features need the most inspection.

KLA's franchise is paid mainly by the makers of leading-edge logic chips. On the third-quarter fiscal 2026 call management guided foundry and logic to "approximately 82%" of semiconductor process control systems revenue in the June quarter, with memory at 18%1. KLA does not publish that split in its 10-K.

KLA revenue shipped to Taiwan ($M)1,106FY20191,598FY20201,691FY20212,529FY20222,493FY20231,738FY20243,205FY20253,644FY2026KLA Forms 10-K FY2021, FY2023 and FY2026, revenue by region
Taiwan more than doubled after FY2024.

The reason is intensity. Logic chips made at the newest nodes have the smallest features and the most patterning steps, so they need the most inspection per wafer. The 10-K credits process control's 12% growth in fiscal 2026 to "continued leading-edge investment supporting AI and HPC applications"2.

Geography shows where that spending is. Revenue shipped to Taiwan was $3,643.7 million in fiscal 2026, 26.8% of the total, up from $1,738.1 million, 17.7%, two years earlier3. Revenue to North America rose 29.0% in fiscal 20264 as new fabs were built there.

The concentration is a strength while leading-edge logic is the part of chipmaking that is growing. It also means KLA's fortunes follow a small number of logic makers' budgets, which is argued on the Major Clients pages.

The logic customers' weight shows in the named-customer list. TSMC is the only customer the 10-K names above 10% of revenue from fiscal 2024 to 20265, and Taiwan's revenue grew 13.7% in fiscal 20266. Memory makers are buying again, but the leading-edge logic fabs remain the largest single source of KLA's orders.

The mix moves a lot from quarter to quarter. In the three months to March 2026 Taiwan took about a quarter of KLA's revenue and Korea about a fifth7; in the June quarter Taiwan's share was about 31% and Korea's about 10%8. A single quarter can shift ten points between the logic and memory regions, so the annual split is the steadier guide.

North America is the newest of the logic regions. Revenue shipped there was $1,757.3 million in fiscal 2026 against $1,362.3 million a year earlier9, as fabs were built in the United States; it is now larger than Korea was two years ago10.

The split should be read each quarter. If memory's share of process control systems revenue rose well above 18% while total revenue stalled, the logic customers would be the ones slowing.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Taiwan revenue more than doubled in two years to $3,643.7M.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Taiwan share of revenue, full year
26.8% (FY2026), from 17.7% in FY2024

Where leading-edge logic is being built; a falling share with flat revenue would say logic spending is slowing.
