✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — the future bets

KLA's bets are that stacked AI chips need more inspection and that its 2030 plan of 13% to 17% a year is reached.

KLA's future rests less on new products than on more of the same demand. Its four bets are that stacked AI chips need more inspection, that the 2030 model is reached, that the $12.57 billion backlog converts, and that buybacks at lower prices add value.

KLA diluted earnings per share, actual and consensus ($)2.03FY20243.04FY20253.66FY20265.45FY2027 consensus6.71FY2028 consensusKLA Form 10-K FY2026 (split-adjusted); stockanalysis consensus, likely non-GAAP
Consensus expects EPS to rise 49% in a year.

Packaging is the newest market. KLA expected advanced packaging revenue of approximately $1 billion in 2026, up from about $635 million1.

The 2030 model is the frame. KLA targets 13% to 17% revenue growth a year through 2030 on an equipment market it assumes will reach $215 billion2. Analysts expect $18.11 billion of revenue in fiscal 2027 and earnings of $5.45 a share3.

The next quarter is the first test. KLA guided the September 2026 quarter to $4.0 billion plus or minus $200 million4.

The buyback is the capital choice: $9.74 billion of authorisation remained at June 20265.

The company's own quarterly figures show the momentum behind these bets. Revenue rose in every quarter of fiscal 2026: $3,209.7 million, $3,297.4 million, $3,415.1 million and $3,657.6 million6789. Net income rose from about $1.12 billion in the first quarter to $1,363.1 million in the fourth1011.

None of the four bets needs another acquisition. Goodwill has fallen from $2,211.9 million after the Orbotech purchase in fiscal 201912 to $1,788.8 million at June 202613, and KLA has made no large purchase since. The bets are that the existing franchise keeps growing, not that KLA buys its way into something new.

None of these is a new business. They are bets that the franchise keeps growing faster than the equipment market. Consensus earnings of $5.45 a share in fiscal 202714 against $3.66 in fiscal 202615 is the combined wager, and a consensus figure cut below $4.50 would say the market had stopped believing it.
