PCB and Component InspectionThin moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
The circuit-board and package inspection business lost money for three years, left displays, and earned $108 million in fiscal 2026 on packaging demand.
PCB and Component Inspection is the Orbotech business that nearly failed and is now riding packaging. Its products brought in $460.3 million in fiscal 2026, 3.4% of revenue12; the segment's revenue, including service, was $750.4 million3.
The 10-K says it sells tools to "inspect, test and measure PCBs, flat panel displays and ICs"4. Until fiscal 2023 the segment was called PCB, Display and Component Inspection, and in March 2024 KLA "announced the end of manufacturing of most Display products"5.
Product revenue went from $238.3 million in fiscal 2019, a part year after the February 2019 acquisition6, to $562.5 million in fiscal 2022, then fell to $291.2 million in fiscal 2024 as display sales ended78. It recovered 22.2% in fiscal 2025 and 29.3% in fiscal 20269.
Profit tells the harder story. The segment lost $142.4 million in fiscal 2023, $470.3 million in fiscal 2024 and $281.2 million in fiscal 2025, the last two including impairments, among them a $230.4 million goodwill charge in fiscal 20251011. In fiscal 2026 it earned $108.0 million12, 14.4% of revenue13. Its gross margin rose from 28.8% in fiscal 2024 to 51.3%14.
The 10-K credits the 21% growth in fiscal 2026 to "customers investing in advanced packaging technologies" and higher PCB revenue, offset by the absence of display15. In the June 2026 quarter segment revenue rose 56.5%16.
The segment's research budget is large for its size. It spent $130.2 million on research and development in fiscal 202617, more than its $108.0 million of segment profit18, and more than twice the $59.4 million spent in Specialty Semiconductor Process19. KLA is paying to stay in packaging and circuit-board inspection, which is consistent with the bet argued on Advanced Packaging: Toward a Billion Dollars.
The recovery was concentrated at the end of the year. The June 2026 quarter's segment revenue of $241.1 million20 was 32% of the whole year's $750.4 million21, which suggests the packaging orders arrived late in fiscal 2026 and carry momentum into fiscal 2027.
The line has turned. It stays turned if segment profit stays positive in fiscal 2027; a return to a loss without an impairment would say packaging had not been enough.
Segment profit $108.0M after losses of $142.4M, $470.3M and $281.2M.
Whether the turnaround holds; a loss without an impairment would say packaging was not enough.
