Lam ResearchWide moat
LRCX — overall economic moat
Lam Research makes the machines that put material onto silicon wafers and take it away again. Incorporated in 1980 and based in Fremont, California1, it describes itself as "a global supplier of innovative wafer fabrication equipment and services to the semiconductor industry"2, with leadership in deposition, etch and clean. Its releases claim that "nearly every advanced chip is built with Lam technology"3.
Revenue was $23,232.7 million in fiscal 2026, the year to 28 June, up 26.0%4. Two lines make it up. Systems, sales of new leading-edge tools, was $14,885.5 million; customer support, which includes spares, service, upgrades and older Reliant tools, was $8,347.2 million5. By location, China was 33.8% of revenue, Taiwan 22.5% and Korea 19.4%67.
It makes money by winning each new step of chipmaking. A chipmaker qualifies a tool for a step on a node and "generally maintains that selection"8, then buys parts and service for years. That produced a gross margin of 50.5% and an operating margin of 35.3% in fiscal 20269, net income of $7,265.4 million and diluted earnings of $5.76 a share10.
The customers are few. Four took 16%, 15%, 12% and 12% of revenue11, and the 10-K names Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and TSMC as its most significant12. Foundry passed memory in fiscal 2025 and was 54% of equipment revenue in fiscal 202613.
The cash goes back to owners. Lam bought back $3,851.3 million of shares and paid $1,270.6 million of dividends in fiscal 202614, more than its free cash flow15, and it raised the quarterly dividend 27% to $0.33 in August 202616. It has about 23,300 employees17. Its shares split ten for one in October 202418. An agreement to acquire KLA-Tencor was later terminated19.
At $307.16 on 24 September 2026 the market value was $384.36 billion20, 53.33 times trailing earnings21.
The company as it stands was shaped by one purchase and one that did not happen. Lam acquired Novellus in June 201222, and in fiscal 2016 it agreed to acquire KLA-Tencor, an agreement later terminated2324. Tim Archer has been president and chief executive since December 201825, and in March 2026 Sesha Varadarajan became chief operating officer26. Lam has paid a quarterly dividend since April 201427.
Growth has come in steps. Revenue was $4,607.3 million in fiscal 201428 and $23,232.7 million in fiscal 202629, about five times as much30, with declines in fiscal 2019 and fiscal 202431. The company made a profit in every year from fiscal 2015 to 202632.
The moat is wide: a technical lead in the steps that multiply as chips stack, locked in by qualification and paid again by service, with a return on invested capital of 70.7%33. It would be falsified by a year in which Lam grows slower than wafer fab equipment spending while China, 26% of revenue in the June 2026 quarter34, keeps shrinking.
Four customers took 55%. Watch the China share and Lam's growth against wafer fab equipment spending.
Source: Lam Research Form 10-K, FY2026 ↗Switching costs are high: a chipmaker that qualifies a Lam tool for a step generally keeps it for the node, and the installed base then buys spares and upgrades. Replication is hard because the process know-how is built over decades of research, now $2.4 billion a year, and more than 40,000 conductor etch chambers in the field. Pricing power shows in a gross margin at a twenty-year high, limited by customers who are few and large. Disruption resistance is moderate: each node reopens the contest, and export rules have created domestic rivals in China. Network effects are minimal. Durability sits in the wide band because the lock has held through two downturns.
