Reliant: Old Nodes, New ToolsNarrow moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

Reliant sells Lam's older designs again to fabs that do not need the newest node, which pays twice for engineering done once.

Not every chip needs the newest process, and Lam sells to those fabs too. Within the customer support group, the Reliant product line offers "new and refurbished non-leading edge products" in deposition, etch and clean "for those applications that do not require the most advanced wafer processing capability"1.

The share peaked when new-tool sales fell.

Reliant turns yesterday's technology into today's revenue. A design Lam developed for a leading-edge node years ago can be sold again, new or refurbished, to a fab making power chips, sensors or older logic. The engineering has been paid for once.

It is also a large part of recent growth. The 10-K says fiscal 2026's increase in customer support revenue was mainly due to revenue from "spares and non-leading-edge equipment"2, and the foundry share rose 900 basis points partly on "mature node spending"3.

Much of that mature node spending has been in China, where fabs have been building capacity for older chips. That makes Reliant more exposed to export rules and domestic competition than Lam's leading-edge tools.

Southeast Asia shows another side of the mature-node market. Lam's revenue there rose from $837.2 million in fiscal 2025 to $1,245.9 million in fiscal 20264, up 48.8%5. Lam does not say which kind of tools drove it.

Reliant widens the moat by keeping older nodes on Lam equipment, so the fab stays a Lam fab. The test is whether customer support revenue keeps growing if China's mature-node building slows; the June 2026 quarter, with China at 26% of revenue6 and customer support up 43%7, suggests so far that it does.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Mature-node spending drove FY2026; China exposure is the limit.

Partly mature-node spending where Reliant sells; a reversal would test how much of the line depends on older fabs.
