Close to the CustomerNarrow moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
More than half of Lam's employees work in Asia beside its customers' fabs, while 60% of its long-lived assets stay in the United States.
Lam's customers are mostly in Asia, and so are most of its people. The 10-K says approximately 38% of its employees are in the United States, 56% in Asia and 6% in Europe1. Its fiscal 2026 revenue came 33.8% from China, 22.5% from Taiwan and 19.4% from Korea23.
The company lists "close-to-customer focus" among its five competitive strengths4. In an industry where a tool is qualified on the customer's own line, engineers who sit near that line help win the selection and keep it. Proximity also supports the service business, which includes spares, upgrades and fleet-level Equipment Intelligence offerings5.
The manufacturing footprint is different. Of $3,353.8 million of long-lived assets at the end of fiscal 2026, $2,003.4 million, about 60%, were in the United States, and China held just $6.5 million despite being the largest market67. Lam builds where it chooses and supports where its customers are.
Lam's research sits at home. Its headquarters is in Fremont, California8, and it runs a research centre in Tualatin, Oregon, where it broke ground on a new lab in August 20269. The engineers who develop processes and the engineers who support them in customer fabs are on different continents, and the business works because the two talk constantly.
Europe shows the other side of the ratio. It holds 6% of Lam's employees10 and supplied $698.7 million of revenue in fiscal 202611, 3.0% of the total12. Lam staffs where the fabs are being built and serviced, not only where they are today.
That split is deliberate and useful: support can follow customers without moving the factories. The measure of whether proximity is working is the share of revenue from customer support, 35.9% in fiscal 202613; a fall below a third while the installed base grows would say the people on site are selling less.
Staffing follows customers; assets stay at home.
Engineers placed beside customer fabs; a shrinking share would mean less presence where selections are made.
