Qualified Once, Kept for the NodeWide moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

A chipmaker that qualifies a Lam tool for a node generally keeps it for that node, so the moat is won at each new node and then collected for years.

The second pillar of Lam's moat is how chipmakers buy. A fab does not pick the cheapest etch tool each year. It qualifies a tool for a specific step on a specific node, and the 10-K says the manufacturer then "generally maintains that selection" for that application and node1. That turns a single decision into years of orders, spares and service.

Lam most significant customers named in the 10-KFY2020-FY2022 list7 companies incl. Intel, Kioxia, YMTCFY2023-FY2025 list2 companies: Samsung, TSMCFY2024-FY2026 list4 companies: Micron, Samsung, SK hynix, TSMCLam Research Forms 10-K FY2021/FY2022, FY2025 and FY2026
The core customers have stayed the same.

The switching cost is the customer's own work. Qualifying a replacement means repeating months of process development and accepting the risk of yield losses on wafers worth far more than the tool. Few fabs will do that for a small price saving.

Lam reinforces the lock in three ways. It takes down payments before delivery: deferred revenue was $2,434.0 million at 28 June 20262. It keeps most of its people close to the customers, 56% of them in Asia3. And it sells new technology as upgrades to installed chambers, so a customer can move forward without leaving Lam4.

The results show the lock holding. Lam's four most significant customers have been the same for three years: Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and TSMC5. Systems revenue was a record $4,249.8 million in the June 2026 quarter6.

The lock has a limit, and Lam's filing states it: the company "may experience difficulty in selling to a given customer if that customer has qualified a competitor's equipment"7. Each new node reopens the contest.

Lam works to be inside the customer's development work before the selection is made. Its 10-K lists a "collaborative focus with semi-ecosystem partners" among its strengths8, and in February 2026 it appointed Anirudh Devgan, chief executive of the chip-design software company Cadence, to its board9. The earlier Lam is involved in a new process, the more likely its tool is the one qualified.

The receivables confirm who the lock binds. At 28 June 2026 five customers accounted for 72% of accounts receivable1011, and the four customers above 10% of revenue took 55%1213. A lock on a few very large customers is worth a great deal, and each of them knows it.

The facet is wide as long as Lam keeps winning at the start of nodes. The foundry share of equipment revenue, 54% in fiscal 202614, is the figure that shows it; a sharp fall in a year of high foundry spending would say the newest nodes were lost at qualification.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Same four key customers for three years; each node reopens the contest.

Whether Lam is being selected on the newest foundry nodes; a sharp fall in a strong foundry year would mean it lost at qualification.
