The Qualification LockWide moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Lam's own 10-K says a chipmaker that qualifies a tool for a node generally keeps it for that node, which turns each win into years of orders.
The heart of Lam's moat is one sentence in its own 10-K. Once a chipmaker has chosen and qualified a supplier's equipment for production, "the manufacturer generally maintains that selection for that specific production application and technology node"1, as long as the tools perform to specification.
Qualification is slow and costly for the customer. A fab has to prove that a new tool produces the same results at production volume, on its own process, before it risks a single wafer that will be sold. Once that work is done, switching would mean doing it again with no guarantee of a better result.
The lock works in both directions, and the filing says so. Lam "may experience difficulty in selling to a given customer if that customer has qualified a competitor's equipment"2. The contest is therefore concentrated at the start of each node, when tools are chosen, and quieter in between.
The revenue that follows a qualification can be seen in the quarterly results. Systems revenue was $4,249.8 million in the June 2026 quarter against $3,437.6 million a year earlier3, up 23.6%4, as customers ramped the nodes on which Lam's tools had been selected.
The quarterly pattern shows qualifications turning into volume. Systems revenue was $3,357.5 million in the December 2025 quarter, $3,730.6 million in March and $4,249.8 million in June567, rising 13.9% in the last quarter alone8. Those were nodes selected earlier, now being filled with tools.
The lock is only as good as the next selection. The figure to follow is systems revenue from quarter to quarter; if it falls while the customers' own capital spending rises, Lam has been designed out of the nodes being built.
Systems revenue +23.6% y/y in Q4 FY2026 on nodes already selected.
Orders from nodes where Lam was selected; a fall while customers spend more would mean it was designed out.
