Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat

Lam returned 105% of its free cash flow in fiscal 2026 and drew down its cash to do it.

In fiscal 2026 Lam gave its shareholders more cash than the business generated after investment. Free cash flow was about $4,891.3 million1, and buybacks plus dividends were $5,121.9 million2: 104.7% of free cash flow3. The year before it was 84.4% and in fiscal 2024 90.7%4.

Shareholder returns as a share of free cash flow (%)90.7%FY202484.4%FY2025104.7%FY2026Calculated from Lam Research Form 10-K FY2026 cash flow statement
Above 100% for the first time in three years.

The difference came from the balance sheet. Cash and equivalents fell from $6,390.7 million to $5,579.2 million over the year5, while Lam also repaid $750 million of notes6.

One year above 100% is not a problem for a company with net cash. A habit would be. Equipment demand can turn quickly, and a company that has been spending more than its free cash flow goes into a downturn with less.

The mix of returns shifted during the year. Buybacks were $1,162.8 million in the March 2026 quarter and $246.6 million in June7, while dividends held at about $325 million a quarter8. Lam cut the flexible part first, which is the right order.

The check is fiscal 2027. With capital spending rising for the lab plan9, returns above free cash flow for a second year would mean Lam is funding its buybacks from its balance sheet.
