Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Lam beats its market in good years and bad, but its revenue still fell 14.5% in fiscal 2024 when the market turned.
Beating the market is little comfort when the market falls. The 10-K says the semiconductor industry "is cyclical in nature" and has periodic downturns1, and Lam's own record proves it. Revenue fell 12.9% in fiscal 2019 and 14.5% in fiscal 20242.
The swings in the other direction are just as large. Revenue rose 45.6% in fiscal 2021 and 26.0% in fiscal 202634. A company that sells equipment for new fabs gets paid when its customers build, and customers build in waves.
The present wave is strong. Management said that looking into 2027 it sees "an extraordinary setup for WFE growth"5. Setups like that are also when orders are pulled forward.
The share price moves first. Lam's market value was $92.94 billion at the end of calendar 2024 and $215.01 billion at the end of 20256, and the price-to-earnings ratio at those dates was 21.7 and 34.97. Investors paid more for each dollar of earnings as the cycle turned up, which is the pattern that reverses in a downturn.
The data point that would signal a turn is guidance. Lam guides one quarter ahead, $8.10 billion plus or minus $400 million for the September 2026 quarter8; a guide below the prior quarter's revenue would be the first sign that the market has stopped growing.
