Two Point Four Billion Dollars of ResearchWide moat

Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet

Lam's research budget rose from $825 million to $2.4 billion in eleven years, and more than a quarter of its 23,300 staff work in research.

Lam spends heavily to stay the tool a fab qualifies. Research and development expense was $2,375.9 million in fiscal 2026, 10.2% of revenue12, and it has risen in every year since fiscal 2015, when it was $825.2 million3. That is almost three times as much eleven years later4.

Research and development expense ($M)825FY20151,190FY20181,493FY20211,902FY20242,376FY2026Lam Research XBRL filings (CF) and Form 10-K FY2026
Nearly three times the spend of FY2015.

The people count tells the same story. As of 4 August 2026 Lam had about 23,300 regular full-time employees, "of which over 26% were engaged in research and development"5. The first of the five strengths Lam lists in its 10-K is "our focus on research and development"6.

The spending is aimed at the steps that get harder as chips shrink and stack. The 10-K says technology inflections are "increasing manufacturing complexity and precision requirements"7, and each such inflection is a chance to be first with a qualified tool. In August 2026 Lam added a plan to invest more than $3 billion over five years in its lab network8, described on the Future Bets page.

Research is also why the moat is expensive to copy. A rival wanting to displace Lam in etch has to match years of spending on processes that are qualified node by node.

More than a quarter of about 23,300 employees is more than 6,000 people working on research and development910. Research spending rose 10.2% in fiscal 2025 and 13.3% in fiscal 20261112, and Lam counts on it to find the new steps each generation of chips adds.

The scale is easier to see against Lam's own past. Research spending of $2,375.9 million in fiscal 202613 was larger than Lam's entire operating income in fiscal 2017, $1,902.1 million14. What was once a year's profit is now a year's research budget.

The spending is the input, not the result. If research expense keeps rising while Lam's share of wafer fab equipment spending falls back from the 36% to 36.5% the chief financial officer cited for 202615, the money would be buying less.

Moat trajectory: Widening

R&D up 13.3% in FY2026; more than $3bn lab plan added.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Research and development expense, full year
$2,375.9M (FY2026), 10.2% of revenue

The input that keeps Lam qualified at each node; rising spend with a falling SAM share would mean it buys less.
