KLAWide moat
KLAC — overall economic moat
KLA sells the tools that tell chipmakers whether their other tools worked. It calls itself "a leading supplier of process control and yield management solutions and services for the semiconductor and related electronics industries"1: inspection systems that find defects on wafers and metrology systems that measure what was made. A new chip process does not work reliably at first, and the time a fab takes to find and fix its defects is time it cannot sell chips. KLA is paid to shorten that time.
Revenue was $13,579.5 million in fiscal 2026, the year to 30 June, up 12%2. Product sales were $10,453.5 million and service $3,125.9 million3. By category, wafer inspection was 49% and patterning 20%4. By segment, Semiconductor Process Control brought in $12,244.7 million, 90.2%, and the two businesses bought with Orbotech in 2019, Specialty Semiconductor Process and PCB and Component Inspection, the rest56.
The margins are those of a franchise. Gross margin was 61.3%7. KLA reports no operating income line, but its costs imply $5,660.8 million, 41.7% of revenue8. Net income was $4,830.8 million and diluted earnings $3.66 a share, adjusted for the ten-for-one split that took effect after the close on 11 June 2026910.
The customers are few and mostly in Asia. International revenue was about 87% of the total11; China was 29.8% and Taiwan 26.8%12. One customer, and the 10-K names TSMC as the only one above 10%, took about 19%13. The backlog rose to $12.57 billion from $7.86 billion14.
The cash goes back to owners. KLA returned $3,347.6 million in fiscal 202615, 88.9% of free cash flow16, and has raised its dividend for 17 consecutive years17. It has about 17,000 employees18 and has been run by Rick Wallace since January 200619.
At $187.92 on 25 September 2026 the market value was $245.24 billion, 51.3 times trailing earnings20, after a July in which the shares fell more than 40%21.
The company is older than its name. KLA-Tencor announced in January 2019 that it would change its name, and the change took effect in July 201922, a few months after the Orbotech purchase closed23. The largest holders are index and fund managers: BlackRock with 8.8% of the shares and Vanguard with 7.5%24, on 1,305,006,492 shares outstanding in September 202625. There is one class of stock and no controlling holder.
The company was shaped by one merger, one that failed and one purchase. KLA-Tencor was formed in April 1997 by merging KLA Instruments and Tencor Instruments26. Lam Research agreed to buy it in October 2015, and the agreement was terminated a year later with no fee paid by either side27. In February 2019 it bought Orbotech for approximately $3.26 billion28, which added the two smaller segments, and in March 2024 it announced the end of manufacturing of most display products29.
The moat is wide: KLA says its process control business is about seven times its nearest rival's30, a claim its 46.4% return on invested capital31 supports even though no outsider measures it. It would be falsified by the process control segment's gross margin, 63.6% in fiscal 202632, falling below 62% in a year when revenue grew.
One customer took about 19%. Watch the process control segment margin and the China share.
Source: KLA Form 10-K, FY2026 ↗Switching costs are high: an inspection method qualified for a node stays in the fab's control plan, and the tool is then serviced for years. Pricing power shows in a process control gross margin between 63.5% and 65.2% for nine years, including the FY2024 downturn. Replication is very hard: KLA spends $1.5 billion a year on research and claims a share about seven times its nearest rival's. Disruption resistance is good but not complete, since Applied Materials sells inspection alongside process tools and export rules encourage Chinese alternatives. Network effects are minimal. Durability sits at the top of the wide band.
