The Revenue LinesWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Wafer inspection and patterning are two-thirds of KLA's revenue and services a quarter; everything else is small.

KLA splits its revenue into product categories that reconcile exactly to the total, and they show a company built on one kind of product. In fiscal 2026, revenue of $13,579.5 million was wafer inspection $6,630.8 million, patterning $2,706.8 million, Specialty Semiconductor Process products $502.5 million, PCB and Component Inspection products $460.3 million, services $3,125.9 million and other $153.1 million1. These are the bands of this company's chart, disclosed on a consistent basis from fiscal 2019.

Half wafer inspection.

Other is the smallest and has no page of its own. The 10-K says it "includes primarily refurbished systems, remanufactured legacy systems, and enhancements and upgrades for previous-generation products"2. It was $232.0 million in fiscal 20193, peaked at $381.1 million in fiscal 2023 and fell to $153.1 million, 1.1% of revenue, in fiscal 202645. Its role in the moat is argued on Refurbished Tools and Upgrades.

The categories and the segments are different cuts. Wafer inspection and patterning are sold in Semiconductor Process Control, services in all three segments6. Segment profit is reported; category profit is not. Process control earned 96.9% of segment profit in fiscal 20267.

Before fiscal 2019 KLA used a broader "Global Service and Support" category that included some product revenue8, so the chart starts in fiscal 2019.

The lines behave differently. Wafer inspection grew 22.2% a year from fiscal 2019, patterning 12.9% and services 15.0%9; patterning fell 26.4% in fiscal 2024 while services rose 10.0%10. The two process control lines were 68.7% of revenue in fiscal 202611.

The segments and the categories disagree on how big the Orbotech businesses are. Specialty Semiconductor Process had segment revenue of $584.1 million in fiscal 2026 and PCB and Component Inspection $750.4 million12; their product categories were $502.5 million and $460.3 million13. The difference is mostly the service revenue those two segments earn, which the category table puts in Services.

The two process control lines have taken a larger share over time. Wafer inspection and patterning were 61.1% of revenue in fiscal 2019 and 68.7% in fiscal 202614, while Other shrank and the Orbotech product lines held roughly steady in dollars. KLA has become more a process control company since it bought its way out of being one.

The mix is the measure. A process control share above 75% would make KLA more dependent on new-tool spending just as the cycle peaks; a services share rising above 25% outside a downturn would say the fleet was paying more of the bills.
