Paid Soon After ShipmentNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

KLA's customers pay 70% to 90% of a tool's price within two months of shipment, which is how buyers behave when they cannot easily go elsewhere.

KLA's customers pay early, which is a sign of who needs whom. The 10-K says its payment terms generally require 70% to 90% of the contract price within 30 to 60 days of shipment, with the rest due within 30 days of acceptance1. For machines that sit in a fab for years, that is prompt money.

Most of the price arrives before the tool is accepted.

The balance sheet carries the result. Deferred system revenue, for tools shipped but not yet recognised, was $932.9 million at the end of fiscal 2026, up from $816.8 million2. Contract liabilities, which include those amounts, were $1,775.1 million3.

Those terms turn profit into cash quickly in normal years. Operating cash flow was $4,081.9 million in fiscal 2025 on net income of $4,061.6 million4, a conversion of about 100%5.

Prompt payment is the practical face of the moat. A buyer with alternatives negotiates longer terms; a buyer who needs the tool to ship chips pays on delivery.

Deferred revenue also comes from service. Deferred service revenue was $604.1 million current and $238.1 million non-current at June 20266. Together with deferred system revenue of $932.9 million7, customers had paid about $1.8 billion for work KLA had not yet completed8.

Early payment is one reason KLA needs so little help from lenders. Its $1.5 billion revolving credit facility, arranged in July 2025 and running to July 2030, is undrawn9; customers' prompt payment does much of the work a credit line would otherwise do.

The pattern held across three years. Free cash flow was $3,767.1 million in fiscal 2026 and $3,746.6 million in fiscal 202510, and about $3,031.2 million in fiscal 202411; in each year it was at least three-quarters of net income12.

Contract liabilities were $1,782.2 million at June 2024 and $1,713.7 million at June 202513, so the prepaid balance has held steady while revenue grew.

The terms are worth watching as the order book grows. KLA added long-term receivables of $180.7 million in fiscal 202614, a category it had not reported before; if that figure kept growing, some customers would be paying on longer terms than the standard ones.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Standard terms unchanged; long-term receivables appeared in FY2026.

Tools shipped and paid for but not yet accepted; a fall while shipments rise would say customers are paying later.
