The Installed Base Pays Every YearWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Every KLA tool in a fab is a service customer for as long as the node runs, and that business has grown every year since 2019.

KLA's third advantage is that its tools keep paying after they are sold. Service revenue was $3,125.9 million in fiscal 2026, about 23% of the total1, and the 10-K describes it as "generated largely from recurring" contracts KLA calls "subscription-like"2.

Up every year, 2.7 times in seven years.

The mechanism is the fab's need for uptime. A qualified inspection tool is part of a production line's control plan, and it has to be calibrated, repaired and upgraded for as long as the node runs. KLA employs as many people in customer service as in research, about 27% of its staff each3.

The line has grown every year on the basis disclosed from fiscal 2019, from $1,176.7 million to $3,125.9 million45, a compound 15.0% a year6. It rose 10.0% in fiscal 2024, the year total revenue fell7.

The pages below argue it in parts: the nature of the contracts on Subscription-Like Contracts; the downturn on Service Rose When Revenue Fell; the growth target on A Services Target of Thirteen to Fifteen Percent; and the rebuilt older tools on Refurbished Tools and Upgrades. The service line's own history and outlook are on Services under The Revenue Lines.

The advantage is wide because it compounds: every record year of shipments adds to the fleet that will need servicing in the next downturn. KLA ships about 87% of its revenue outside the United States8, so the fleet is global, and so are the rules that govern it.

Service is spread across all three segments, as the 10-K notes: "Services are offered in multiple segments"9. That means the Orbotech businesses carry their own installed bases too, which is part of why their segment revenue exceeds their product revenue by $371.7 million in fiscal 202610.

The service organisation is as large as the research one. About 27% of KLA's roughly 17,000 regular employees work in customer service11, around 4,600 people12, spread across the regions where the tools are installed. Those people are the reason a fab renews a contract rather than hiring its own technicians.

The thing that would falsify it is service revenue falling in a downturn. Until then, the service share of revenue, 23.0% in fiscal 202613, is the number to watch; a slide below 20% outside a boom in new tools would mean the fleet had begun servicing itself.
