PatterningNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Patterning is a fifth of KLA's revenue, fell 26% in fiscal 2024 and is still below its 2023 peak.

Patterning is KLA's second process control line and the more volatile of the two. It brought in $2,706.8 million in fiscal 2026, 20% of revenue1, and sits in the Semiconductor Process Control segment beside wafer inspection2.

Down 26% in FY2024 and not yet back to the peak.

The name refers to the patterning steps of chipmaking, where circuits are printed onto the wafer, and KLA does not break the category down further in its revenue table. It is where KLA's work sits closest to lithography, and ASML, which specialises in lithography3, is one of KLA's five named competitors4.

The history on the current basis starts at $1,161.3 million in fiscal 20195. Patterning rose 36.2% in each of fiscal 2022 and 2023, to a peak of $2,791.1 million67, then fell 26.4% to $2,054.4 million in fiscal 202489, KLA's one down year. It recovered 6.9% in fiscal 2025 and 23.2% in fiscal 202610, and is still below its fiscal 2023 peak. Over seven years it grew 2.3 times, about 12.9% a year11, slower than wafer inspection. On the earlier basis KLA-Tencor reported $737.0 million for fiscal 201512.

Patterning tools are sold and serviced like the rest of KLA's equipment, and the profit is reported only for the segment, whose gross margin was 63.6% in fiscal 202613.

The swing suggests patterning spending is tied to new-node transitions: it rises when customers bring up new lithography steps and falls when they pause. Its share of revenue went from 26.6% in fiscal 2023 to 18.1% in fiscal 2025 and back to 19.9% in fiscal 202614.

Patterning's peak coincided with KLA's strongest year for Korea and Japan. In fiscal 2023, when patterning reached $2,791.1 million15, revenue shipped to Korea was $1,895.7 million and to Japan $888.0 million1617; the next year Korea halved18. The filings do not tie the two, but the timing is consistent with memory makers' spending, which fell sharply in fiscal 2024.

Within process control, patterning has lost weight. It was 39.2% of the two process control lines in fiscal 2023 and 29.0% in fiscal 202619. Wafer inspection took the rest of the growth, which fits a period in which leading-edge logic, the heaviest user of defect inspection, did most of the buying.

The line would be in trouble if it fell again in a year when wafer inspection grew. That divergence would suggest the measurement of patterns was moving to the companies that print them.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

+23.2% in FY2026, still 3% below FY2023.

The swing line; a fall while wafer inspection grew would suggest measurement moving to the lithography makers.
