⚠ Service Contracts Are Renewed One by OneLow threat

KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat

KLA's service contracts renew one customer at a time, and its disclosed unrecognised contract value is only $1.8 billion.

KLA's service revenue is recurring in practice but not locked in on paper. The 10-K discloses transaction price not yet recognised of $1,775.1 million, and says it equals KLA's contract liabilities1. That figure covers tools awaiting acceptance as well as service; even if all of it were service it would be about seven months of service revenue2, far from a multi-year backlog of subscriptions.

Service grew faster than product.

So the contracts are renewed customer by customer, and a customer that builds its own service capability, or uses a third party, can stop renewing.

KLA's filings do not show that happening. Service revenue has risen in every year since fiscal 201934.

The unrecognised contract price is weighted to the near term: $1,537.0 million of the $1,775.1 million falls due within twelve months, $163.4 million in the second year and $74.8 million beyond5. The contracts, in other words, run about a year at a time.

Only a small part of the service book runs beyond a year. Non-current deferred service revenue was $238.1 million at June 20266, about 8% of a year's service revenue7. Most customers prepay for a year or less, which keeps KLA's service income dependent on each year's renewal decisions.

Contract liabilities have barely moved in three years: $1,782.2 million, $1,713.7 million and $1,775.1 million at June 2024, 2025 and 20268.

The risk would show first in the mix. Service growth below product growth for two consecutive years, outside a surge in tool shipments, would say renewals were weakening.
