⚠ Memory Budgets HalveModerate threat
KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat
Korean memory makers have twice cut their spending with KLA by half in a single year.
Memory makers cut spending harder than anyone else, and KLA's Korea line shows it. Revenue shipped to Korea fell from $1,178.6 million in fiscal 2018 to $584.1 million in fiscal 20191, and from $1,895.7 million in fiscal 2023 to $906.9 million in fiscal 20242, falls of about 50% and 52%3.
The fiscal 2026 recovery rests on one product, high-bandwidth memory4. When that product's buildout slows, the old pattern is likely to return.
Memory also costs KLA money on the other side. DRAM price rises were costing KLA's gross margin "roughly 100 basis point" in 20265, so memory is both customer and supplier.
Fiscal 2024 showed how memory's cut spreads. Korea fell 52% that year6 while China rose to $4,196.7 million, 42.8% of revenue7, as domestic Chinese chipmakers kept buying. Without that China surge, KLA's one downturn would have been much deeper, and China's buying is the part the export rules now limit.
The fiscal 2019 fall was absorbed by others. Korea halved that year, yet KLA's revenue rose from $4,036.7 million to $4,568.9 million8, helped by China, which rose to $1,215.8 million from $643.0 million9, and by the first months of Orbotech10. Each memory slump so far has been covered by someone else's buying, and there is no guarantee the next one will be.
Korea was 13.5% of revenue in fiscal 202611. A halving would cost about seven points of revenue, and Korea's revenue falling for two consecutive quarters would be the early sign.
