Samsung: From Largest to UnnamedNarrow moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
Samsung went from KLA's only large customer in fiscal 2018 to unnamed by fiscal 2024, showing that the lock is on inspection, not on any one buyer's budget.
Samsung shows how quickly a large customer's weight can change. In fiscal 2018 it was the only customer above 10% of KLA's revenue, at 21%1. From fiscal 2021 to 2023 it was one of two named customers above 10%, beside TSMC2, and in fiscal 2023 the two took 18% and 15% of revenue3. Since fiscal 2024 the 10-K names only TSMC4.
The drop is visible in the regional figures. Revenue shipped to Korea fell from $1,895.7 million in fiscal 2023 to $906.9 million in fiscal 20245, and recovered to $1,833.8 million in fiscal 20266.
The earlier list shows the same churn. In fiscal 2015 KLA's customers above 10% were Intel, TSMC and Samsung, and in fiscal 2016 Micron and TSMC7. Intel and Micron have since dropped out.
For KLA this is the reverse of a lock-in problem: the customers are locked into inspection, but their spending moves between them. Samsung falling below 10% did not cost KLA the relationship; it reflected Samsung spending less while TSMC spent more.
Samsung's receivables disclosure followed the same path. At the end of fiscal 2018 Samsung, TSMC and SK hynix each held more than 10% of KLA's receivables8; by fiscal 2024 only TSMC did9. The memory makers still buy from KLA, as Korea's $1,833.8 million of fiscal 2026 revenue shows10, but none is large enough on its own to cross the disclosure line.
Memory's peak weight came earlier still. In fiscal 2018 revenue shipped to Korea was $1,178.6 million, 29% of KLA's total11, the largest region that year. By fiscal 2026 Korea's revenue was larger in dollars but a smaller share, because Taiwan and China had grown faster.
Korea's revenue rose 26.2% in fiscal 2026, which the 10-K credits to investment in high-bandwidth memory12.
The pattern is the thing to watch rather than any name. If Korea's share of revenue, 13.5% in fiscal 202613, rose back above 18% while Samsung reappeared above the 10% line, KLA's growth would again rest on two customers' budgets instead of one.
Korea revenue +26.2% in FY2026 on HBM investment.
The weight of the memory makers; a return above 18% would put KLA's growth back on two customers.
