ServicesWide moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA's service line has grown every year since fiscal 2019, at 15% a year, and rose even when total revenue fell.
Services is KLA's steadiest line and its second largest. It brought in $3,125.9 million in fiscal 2026, 23% of revenue1, and the 10-K says "Services are offered in multiple segments"2, so it spans process control and the two Orbotech businesses.
What is inside it is the maintenance, repair, calibration and upgrades of KLA's installed tools, largely on contracts KLA calls "subscription-like"3. The moat argument for it, why a fab keeps paying, is on The Installed Base Pays Every Year and its pages; this one is the line's record.
On the current basis the line starts at $1,176.7 million in fiscal 20194. It grew 25.6% in fiscal 2020, then between 10.0% and 16.5% every year since, reaching $3,125.9 million56. It is 2.7 times its fiscal 2019 level, 15.0% a year7. It rose even in fiscal 2024, when total revenue fell8. Before fiscal 2019 KLA reported a broader "Global Service and Support" category that included some product revenue9, so the older figures are not comparable.
Customers pay under contracts and as work is done. Deferred service revenue was $604.1 million current and $238.1 million non-current at June 202610.
KLA does not report service profit, and the 10-K's gross margin bridge treats service and manufacturing costs together11. About 27% of its 17,000 employees work in customer service12.
The outlook is a target: services growth of 13% to 15% a year through 203013. The June 2026 quarter brought in $820.4 million, up 16.8%1415, above it.
The service line is staffed across the world. About 50% of KLA's employees are in Asia, 31% in the United States and 19% in Europe and the Middle East16, which matches where the tools are: 87% of revenue ships outside the United States17. A service contract is only as good as the engineer who can reach the fab, and KLA keeps them where its customers are.
The line's share of revenue moves against the cycle. Services were 25.8% of revenue in fiscal 2019, fell to 20.2% in fiscal 2023 as product sales boomed, rose to 23.7% in fiscal 2024 when product sales fell, and were 23.0% in fiscal 202618. That pattern is what an installed base looks like: steady dollars inside a swinging total.
The line would lose its standing if it fell in a year, which it has not done on this basis. Growth below 10% outside a downturn would be the first warning.
+16.8% y/y in Q4 FY2026.
The recurring line each quarter; growth below 10% outside a downturn would be the first warning.
