A Claim of Seven TimesWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

KLA says its process control business is seven times its nearest rival's; the margins it earns are what a lead of that size would look like, but the multiple itself is KLA's word.

The size of KLA's lead is a number KLA states and nobody independent confirms. On the third-quarter fiscal 2026 call Rick Wallace, the chief executive, said KLA's share of process control has grown 360 basis points since 2021 and is "approximately 7x greater than the nearest competitor"1. He added that share improved in several inspection categories, naming optical pattern wafer inspection and electron beam inspection2.

Three claims from a call, two figures from the filing.

Treat that as KLA's claim. The research firms that measure equipment markets sell their process control figures behind paywalls, and none of them could be read for this page. What KLA's own filings allow is a check on the consequences a lead of that size ought to have.

The first consequence is margin. A supplier with rivals of similar size cannot hold prices through a downturn; KLA's Semiconductor Process Control segment earned a gross margin between 63.5% and 65.2% in every fiscal year from 2018 to 2022, and 63.6% in fiscal 2026345. The second is scale against named rivals. The 10-K lists Applied Materials, ASML, Hitachi High-Tech, Lasertec and Onto Innovation6; the smallest of those with a quoted market value, Onto, was worth $14.05 billion on 25 September 20267, against KLA's $245.24 billion8.

The third is revenue concentration in the franchise. Semiconductor Process Control brought in $12,244.7 million of KLA's $13,579.5 million of fiscal 2026 revenue9, 90.2% of it10.

Those three facts fit a very large lead. They do not prove seven times, and a reader should not repeat the multiple as if an auditor had measured it.

KLA's public ranking among all equipment makers is a different measure. TechInsights placed KLA fifth among equipment suppliers in 2021, and in 2017 VLSI Research put its equipment sales at 5.5% of the market11. Those numbers include lithography, deposition and etch, where KLA barely competes; they say nothing about its share of inspection itself.

The claim will be restated on future calls, and the wording is the thing to track. If management stops quoting a multiple, or quotes a smaller one, the lead has narrowed; the gross margin of the process control segment falling below 62% for a full year would say the same thing in figures.

Process control segment gross margin, full year
63.6% (FY2026: $7,791.2M on $12,244.7M)

What a lead is worth in price; a full year below 62% would say the lead has narrowed.

How it's calculated: Semiconductor Process Control revenue less segment costs of revenues ($4,453.6M), divided by segment revenue, KLA Form 10-K FY2026 segment note.
