⚠ Installation and Warranty Costs Rise With the FleetLow threat

KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat

Each record year adds tools under warranty that KLA services at its own cost before they pay.

A growing installed base costs money before it earns it. The fiscal 2026 gross margin bridge shows other service and manufacturing costs taking 0.1 points, and the 10-K says they "included higher installation and warranty costs and increased costs due to tariffs"1.

KLA costs of revenues ($M)3,592FY20224,218FY20233,928FY20244,752FY20255,255FY2026KLA XBRL filings (SEC EDGAR) and Form 10-K FY2026
Up 10.6% in FY2026, in line with product revenue.

Those costs rise with shipments. Record tool deliveries in fiscal 2026 mean more tools under warranty, serviced at KLA's expense, before they become paid service contracts.

The people are the largest part. Research and development rose 13%, mainly on $124.8 million more in employee costs2, and service is staffed on a similar scale.

Tariffs add to the cost of servicing a global fleet. The Q4 release names "tariffs, retaliatory trade measures and other trade restrictions" among its risks3, and parts crossing borders to reach installed tools are exposed to them. KLA's service business runs on parts flowing to 18 major regions where it has facilities4.

The same bridge shows what is paying for them. Manufacturing labour, overhead and efficiencies added 0.2 points to the gross margin in fiscal 20265, twice what installation, warranty and tariffs took away. For now, efficiency in the factories is covering the fleet's upkeep.

The fleet is supported where it runs. About 27% of KLA's roughly 17,000 employees work in customer service6, around 4,600 people7, and half of all employees are in Asia8, where most of the installed tools are. That support is a fixed cost that does not fall when shipments do.

KLA does not report a service gross margin, so the pressure shows only in the company figure. A company gross margin below 60% in a year of rising service revenue would say the fleet was costing more to support than it paid.
