✦ The Four Billion Dollar QuarterNarrow moat

KLA (KLAC) — the future bets

KLA guided the September 2026 quarter to $4.0 billion, 25% more than a year earlier, and the result is the first test of the backlog.

The next data point KLA has committed to is a quarter of about $4 billion. For the three months to September 2026, revenues are "expected to be in a range of $4.0 billion +/- $200 million"1, with a GAAP gross margin of 61.6% plus or minus 1.0 point and GAAP earnings of $1.14 a share plus or minus $0.102.

Five rising quarters if the guide is met.

At the midpoint that is 24.6% above the September 2025 quarter and 9.4% above the June 2026 record3. Analysts had expected $3.93 billion, as Barron's reported4.

The guidance is the only forward figure KLA publishes for the near term; it gives no annual outlook5. It is also the first quarter reported after the stock's July collapse, which is argued on The Worst Month in KLA's History.

The bet is that the $12.57 billion backlog6 converts on schedule. A quarter at $4 billion would mean faster sequential growth than any quarter of fiscal 2026.

The guide assumes about 1,312 million diluted shares7, down from 1,319.6 million for fiscal 20268, so buybacks are expected to continue. The non-GAAP guide is a gross margin of 62.5% plus or minus 1.0 point and earnings of $1.16 a share plus or minus $0.109; the gap to GAAP is small.

A $4.0 billion quarter would be KLA's largest, above the $3,657.6 million record of June 202610, and close to the $4,036.7 million KLA earned in the whole of fiscal 201811.

Earnings are guided to rise faster than revenue. The GAAP guide of $1.14 a share compares with $8.47 before the split, about $0.85 after it, in the September 2025 quarter1213, an increase of about 35%14.

The quarter it will be compared with, September 2025, had revenue of $3,209.7 million: $2,465.0 million of products and $744.7 million of service15.

At the midpoint the quarter would add about $342 million to the June record16, and even the $3.93 billion analysts expected before the guide would have been a new high1718.

The report is due around 28 October 202619. Revenue below $3.8 billion, the bottom of the range, would be the first sign the backlog was converting more slowly than planned.

Revenue guidance, next quarter
$4.0bn +/- $0.2bn (Q1 FY2027)

The near-term promise; revenue below $3.8bn would say the backlog is converting slowly.
