Seventeen Dividend RaisesNarrow moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
KLA has raised its dividend seventeen years running and still pays out only about a fifth of its earnings.
KLA pays a dividend it keeps raising. In March 2026 it raised the quarterly dividend 21%, from $1.90 to $2.30 a share before the split1, which the 10-K calls its "17th consecutive annual dividend increase"2. After the split that is $0.23 a quarter, declared again in August 20263.
The dividend is a small part of earnings. KLA paid $1,057.8 million in dividends in fiscal 20264, 21.9% of net income5. Buybacks were more than twice as large.
It has a history of large one-off payments too. In the December 2014 quarter KLA-Tencor paid a special dividend of $16.50 a share before the split, $1.65 after it6. Dividends paid in fiscal 2015 were $3,041.1 million7, 8.3 times that year's net income8, and shareholders' equity fell to $421.4 million9.
The steady raises and the special payment say the same thing. KLA treats cash beyond what the business needs as the owners' money, and its capital structure is built around returning it.
The latest declaration was $0.23 a share, payable on 1 September 202610. The indicated annual dividend is $0.92, a yield of about 0.49% at the September price11. The yield is small because the price is high; the dividend's growth, not its level, is what KLA's owners are paid in.
The raises have compounded. Dividends declared were $2.08 a share before the split in fiscal 201612, about $0.21 after it13, and $0.80 in fiscal 202614, almost four times as much, while net income rose about 6.9 times15. The dividend has grown more slowly than profit, which is why the payout has stayed near a fifth of earnings.
The quarterly payment of $0.23 compares with GAAP earnings of $1.04 a share in the June 2026 quarter16, a little over a fifth17.
Dividends paid rose from $904.6 million in fiscal 2025 to $1,057.8 million in fiscal 202618, about 17%19.
The dividend is secure while earnings grow. A payout ratio above 40% of net income, from 21.9% now, would mean either earnings had fallen or the dividend was being raised faster than the business could support.
Raised 21% in March 2026; payout 21.9% of net income.
How much room the dividend has; above 40% would mean earnings had fallen or the dividend was outrunning them.
