KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat
Process control earns 97% of KLA's segment profit, so a bad year there has nothing to soften it.
The other side of focus is that KLA has nowhere else to earn money if process control stumbles. The two smaller segments together earned $172.6 million of segment profit in fiscal 202612, about 3% of the total, and in fiscal 2024 PCB and Component Inspection lost $470.3 million3.
Process control itself depends on one industry's spending. Its revenue fell from $9,324.2 million in fiscal 2023 to $8,733.6 million in fiscal 20244, a drop of about 6%5, and the smaller segments did nothing to offset it.
KLA's 10-K lists "cyclicality of the industries in which we operate" among its risks6.
The concentration extends to the geography of the franchise. The United States holds $771.3 million of KLA's long-lived assets, Europe $289.6 million and Singapore $191.5 million7. Research, manufacturing and service for the one business that matters are spread across a handful of sites, and KLA self-insures certain risks, including earthquake risk8.
The dependence has deepened rather than eased. Process control's segment revenue was $4,745.4 million in fiscal 20209 and $12,244.7 million in fiscal 202610, rising from 81.7% to 90.2% of the segment total11 as the Orbotech businesses shrank beside it.
A diversified toolmaker would cushion a bad year in one market with another. KLA has chosen not to be that company. If process control revenue fell more than 10% in a year, there would be nothing in the segment table to absorb it.
