Onto, Lasertec and Hitachi: The SpecialistsWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

Onto, Lasertec and Hitachi compete one inspection step at a time, and Onto is a seventeenth of KLA's size.

The rest of KLA's named competitors are specialists, and they compete one inspection step at a time. The 10-K lists Hitachi High-Tech, Lasertec and Onto Innovation beside Applied and ASML1. Onto was worth $14.05 billion on 25 September 20262, about a seventeenth of KLA3.

Three of the five named rivals are specialists.

Specialists are dangerous in a different way from giants. They cannot outspend KLA across the fab, but they can concentrate on one step and do it better. KLA spent $1,532.1 million on research in fiscal 20264; a specialist's budget is smaller, but all of it can go into one tool.

KLA's defence is breadth. It sells inspection and metrology across the fab and services the whole fleet, and its research spend is spread across products that share the same customers and the same service network.

KLA also expects new names. The 10-K warns that it "may also face future competition from new market entrants overseas or domestically"5, which could include Chinese equipment makers encouraged by export rules to build local alternatives.

The scale difference shows in the research budget alone. KLA's research spending of $1,532.1 million in fiscal 20266 is about 0.6% of its market value; for a company of Onto's size, $14.05 billion7, matching KLA's research dollar for dollar would take about a ninth of its market value every year8. Specialists can pick steps; they cannot pick all of them.

KLA names the steps where it says it gained. On the March 2026 call Wallace said KLA's share "also improved across basket inspection, optical pattern wafer inspection and electron beam inspection"9. Those are the steps a specialist would have to take back first, and KLA's claim, not a third party's, is the only source for the gains.

The relationship is a contest of focus against breadth. KLA's claim of share gains in several inspection categories on the March 2026 call10 is the evidence it is winning. If KLA began conceding a category by name, or its advanced packaging share, which it says rose 14 percentage points11, was reported lower, a specialist would have found its step.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

KLA claims share gains in several categories.
