⚠ The Legacy Line Is ShrinkingLow threat

KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat

KLA's refurbished-tool revenue fell by a quarter in fiscal 2026, in the mature fabs where Chinese buyers are investing.

A shrinking refurbishment line is the one part of KLA's installed-base story going the wrong way. Other revenue fell 38.6% in fiscal 2025 and 25.2% in fiscal 20261, to $153.1 million2.

Change in refurbished and legacy systems revenue (%)-12.6FY2024-38.6FY2025-25.2FY2026KLA Forms 10-K FY2023 and FY2026, Other product category
Three falls in a row.

Mature-node fabs are where China's domestic chipmakers have been investing: the 10-K says China revenue was flat because "continued investments in legacy-node technologies by domestic semiconductor companies were largely offset by export control restrictions"3. Those are the customers most likely to want rebuilt tools, and the ones export rules make hardest to serve.

The amounts are too small to matter much to earnings. The line was 1.1% of revenue4.

KLA itself stopped making most display products in March 20245, and restructuring charges were $21.6 million in fiscal 2024, $7.7 million in fiscal 2025 and $1.2 million in fiscal 20266. Some of the shrinkage in older product lines is KLA's own choice to leave businesses it did not want.

The shrinkage coincided with KLA's own new-tool record. Wafer inspection revenue rose to $6,630.8 million in fiscal 2026 from $4,333.3 million two years earlier7, up 53%, while Other fell by more than half8. Customers buying the newest tools have less use for rebuilt ones, and that may be all the decline means.

The category includes remanufactured legacy systems as well as upgrades for previous-generation products9, so its fall is also a measure of how often KLA's older tools come back to it.

It matters as a signal. If refurbished revenue fell below $100 million, KLA would be ceding the mature fabs to others.
