Service Rose When Revenue FellWide moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
When KLA's revenue fell 6.5% in fiscal 2024, service revenue rose 10%, because tools already in fabs still need servicing.
The clearest proof that KLA's installed base pays is fiscal 2024. Total revenue fell 6.5% that year1, and service revenue rose 10.0%, from $2,117.0 million to $2,329.6 million234.
That is what an installed base does in a slowdown. Customers stop buying new tools, but the tools already in their fabs still need servicing. Service went from 20.2% of revenue in fiscal 2023 to 23.7% in fiscal 20245, not because it surged but because everything else fell.
The cushion is real but not large. In fiscal 2024 service added $212.6 million6 while product revenue fell by more than four times that, and net income still fell 18.5%7.
The protection grows with the fleet. Every tool shipped in the record years of fiscal 2025 and 2026 is a future service customer, and service revenue rose to $3,125.9 million in fiscal 20268.
The quarterly figures show the same pattern within a year. Service revenue in the June 2026 quarter was $820.4 million against $702.6 million a year earlier9, while product revenue rose from $2,472.2 million to $2,837.2 million10. In a strong quarter, product grew faster; the cushion shows only when product falls.
The mix held the margin. KLA's gross margin was 60.0% in fiscal 202411, slightly above fiscal 2023's 59.8%12, even as revenue fell; a larger share of service and of process control kept the rate from slipping while the volume went.
Service kept growing through the recovery too: about 15.2% in fiscal 202513 and 16% in fiscal 202614. It never led the cycle and never followed it down, which is how a charge on an installed base should behave.
Service has risen in each of the seven years since fiscal 20191516, through the fiscal 2024 downturn and the recoveries on either side of it.
In the June 2026 quarter, with products at a record, service was about 22.4% of revenue17.
The test is the next downturn. If service revenue fell in a year when product revenue fell, the installed base would have stopped being a cushion, and KLA's cycle would be as deep as everyone else's.
Service rose in every year from FY2019 to FY2026.
The cushion under the cycle; a fall below 20% outside a product surge would mean customers servicing the fleet themselves.
