⚠ Packaging Invites New RivalsModerate threat
KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat
KLA's packaging lead is a year or two old, and the rival that concentrates on that market is a specialist.
The advantage KLA claims in packaging is recent, and recent leads are the easiest to lose. KLA's 10-K warns that it "may also face future competition from new market entrants overseas or domestically"1, and packaging is where a newcomer would start, because the inspection problems are new for everyone.
The named rivals are already there. Onto Innovation, one of the five competitors in the 10-K2, is a specialist of the kind that can concentrate on one market; it was worth $14.05 billion in September 20263.
KLA's own figures give a narrow base to defend. About $1 billion of expected packaging revenue4 is roughly 7% of fiscal 2026 revenue5.
KLA's own history in this segment is a caution. The PCB and Component Inspection segment lost money in each of fiscal 2023, 2024 and 202567, and KLA took a $230.4 million goodwill impairment on it in fiscal 20258. A market that is new to everyone can turn profitable or unprofitable quickly, and KLA has already seen both.
The segment chasing packaging has already changed shape once. Until fiscal 2023 it was called PCB, Display and Component Inspection9; display is gone, and packaging is its new reason for being. A business rebuilt around a young market is exposed to whoever enters that market next.
The 14-point share gain KLA claims is the sort of number that can reverse as quickly as it arrived. A packaging share quoted lower on a later call, or PCB and Component Inspection growth falling below the company rate, would show rivals catching up.
