Strongest advantageA federation of more than 140 general managers that held operating margins at 19% to 21% for a decade and earned 15% to 20% on capital while buying about $23 billion of businesses
Greatest threatConcentration: IT datacom went from 19% of sales in 2023 to 43% in Q2 2026, one segment earns two-thirds of segment profit, and 37% of the plant sits in China
Key metricIT datacom share of sales (43% in Q2 2026) and return on invested capital with CommScope counted (27.9% in 2025, flattered)
Verdict: Amphenol's moat is its way of running a business: more than 140 general managers each owning a niche, a cheap centre, and an acquisition machine that has kept returns on capital between 15% and 20% for a decade. The AI data-centre boom has lifted margins to 29.5% and made the company far less diversified, while the $10.5 billion CommScope purchase added $13.4 billion of net debt. At about 40 times earnings the shares price today's record margins as permanent.

Amphenol makes the parts that carry electricity, light and signals from one component to the next. It calls itself "one of the world's largest designers, manufacturers and marketers of electrical, electronic and fiber optic connectors and interconnect systems, antennas, sensors and sensor-based products and coaxial, high-speed, fiber optic and specialty cable"1. Its customers are equipment makers, their contract manufacturers and distributors; the products go into servers, aircraft, cars, factories, phones and weapons.

Sales more than quadrupled in ten years, most of the rise since 2024.

Net sales were $23,094.7 million in 2025, up 51.7%23, and 38% organically4. The segments were Communications Solutions $12,056.0 million, Harsh Environment Solutions $5,881.7 million and Interconnect and Sensor Systems $5,157.0 million5. By market, IT datacom was 36%, industrial 19% and automotive 15%6. About 65% of sales were outside the United States, with China about 16%7.

The margins jumped. Operating income was $5,868.6 million, a 25.4% margin, against 19.1% to 20.7% in every year from 2015 to 202489. Net income was $4,270.3 million and diluted earnings $3.34 a share10, $1.67 after the September 2026 split11. Free cash flow was about $4.4 billion12.

The company is run as a federation. More than 140 general managers run "unique, independent businesses"13, with about 170,000 employees14. It grows by buying: about $23.1 billion of acquisitions since 201515, including CommScope's cable business for about $10.5 billion, closed on 9 January 2026 and "the largest acquisition in the Company's history"16. It has split its shares three times since 2021, most recently on 2 September 202617.

The June 2026 quarter showed where it is heading: sales of $8,758.1 million, up 55%, a 29.5% operating margin18, and IT datacom at 43% of sales19. At $83.14 on 28 September 2026 the market value was $205.02 billion, 42.07 times trailing earnings20.

The products are small and the engineering is local. The company designs, manufactures and assembles its products "at facilities in approximately 40 countries around the world"21. Product design teams at most business units work with customers, "which often results in the Company obtaining approved vendor status for its customers' new products and programs"22, and about 6,400 employees supported research, development and engineering at the end of 202523. Its raw materials run from gold, silver and palladium to copper wire and optical fibre24. It sells through its own sales force, independent representatives and distributors, which took about 19% of 2025 sales25.

The history is long. Predecessor businesses were founded in 1932, the company was incorporated in Delaware in 1986 and its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 199126. There is one class of stock. The market value was $16.10 billion at the end of 201527; at $205.02 billion it is 12.7 times that28, and the dividend was raised to $0.25 a quarter in October 202529, $0.125 after the split30. Ten years ago the company was a quarter of this size. Net sales were $5,568.7 million in 201531, and they have grown 4.1 times since32, with only two flat years in between. About 90% of its workforce is outside the United States33.

The moat is wide: a return on invested capital of 14.8% to 19.9% every year from 2015 to 202434, earned by a system rather than a monopoly. What would falsify it is the return with CommScope counted: below 15% for 2026 would say the system has stopped earning more than the price of what it buys.

Overall durability8/10

Switching costs are real but modest: parts qualified into aircraft, defense and car platforms stay for years, while data-centre sockets are re-competed each generation. Pricing power was steady rather than rising for a decade (operating margin 19% to 21%) until AI lifted it. Replication is hard because the advantage is an organisation of more than 140 general managers and a long acquisition record, not a product. Disruption resistance is good across eight end markets but weakened by the 43% concentration in IT datacom. Network effects are minimal. Durability sits at the bottom of the wide band.
