⚠ Mobile Devices Shrank to Four PercentLow threat
Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat
Mobile devices fell from 15% of Amphenol's sales in 2020 to 4% in mid-2026, a preview of what happens when a few large buyers move on.
Amphenol once earned a large share of its sales from phones, tablets and laptops, and that business has faded. Mobile devices were about 13% of sales in 20191, 15% in 20202, 12% in 20213, 11% in 20224, 10% in 20235, 9% in 20246 and 6% in 20257. In the June 2026 quarter the share was 4%8.
In dollars the market has barely moved: about $1.3 billion in 2020 and about $1.4 billion in 20259. It shrank as a share because everything around it grew. It also carried the company's last two large customers. About 12% of 2018 sales went to one customer, a figure that counted "sales of products to EMS companies that the Company believes are manufacturing products on their behalf"10, and about 11% of 2020 sales went to one customer11, in a year when mobile devices were 15% of sales12. No customer has reached 10% since13.
Mobile devices are not dead: sales grew 17% in dollars and 14% organically in the June 2026 quarter14, and the chief executive said sequential growth of 19% was "much better than our expectations"15. But the market is a reminder of what happens to a component supplier in a consumer business: design cycles are short, a handful of brands dominate, and a lost socket goes with the next model.
It is also a warning for IT datacom, which is concentrated in a similar way among a few large builders. Mobile devices went from a seventh of Amphenol to a twenty-fifth in six years. The company still lists mobile devices among its seven markets16, and only the Communications Solutions description lists it.
The share is small enough now that it no longer moves the company. What it teaches is the number to watch elsewhere: if IT datacom's share starts to fall while total sales still grow, the same thing will be happening in the market that matters.
