Commercial Air and Defense: Long ProgrammesWide moat

Amphenol (APH) — moat facet

Aerospace and defense are only about an eighth of Amphenol's sales but carry its stickiest designs, and it bought CIT and Trexon to own more of them.

The markets where switching costs are highest are also some of Amphenol's smallest. Commercial aerospace was about 5% of sales in 2019, 3% in 2020, 2% in 2021 and 4% in 20231234, 6% in 20245, 5% in 20256 and 4% in the June 2026 quarter7. Defense, called military until 2022, was 12% in 20198, 11% in 20249, 9% in 202510 and 8% in the quarter11.

About an eighth of sales, split roughly two to one.

A connector qualified into an aircraft or a weapons system is hard to replace. Changing it can mean re-testing the system, and the programmes run for decades. That is why Amphenol bought into these markets rather than waiting to grow into them: CIT for about $1,995.3 million in 202412 for "commercial air, defense and industrial markets"13, and Trexon for $1,050.3 million in 2025, "primarily for the defense market"14. Both went into Harsh Environment Solutions1516.

The pandemic showed what such markets do in a shock. Commercial aerospace fell from 5% of sales in 2019 to 2% in 2021 as aircraft stopped flying, and it took until 2024 to reach 6%. Defense barely moved.

Growth is strong now. In the June 2026 quarter defense sales rose 37% in dollars and 24% organically, and commercial air 22% and 21%17, which management put down to "increased aircraft production volumes and higher content on next-generation platforms"18.

The factories are built for it. Many are certified to AS9100, the aerospace quality standard, alongside ISO900119, and Harsh Environment Solutions, where these businesses sit, sold $1,856.8 million in the June 2026 quarter, up 28%2021. The acquisitions landed in the segment built for them. In 2025, "three acquisitions, including Trexon, are included in the Harsh Environment Solutions segment"22, and the segment's June-quarter margin was 30.1%23. Commercial air grew 21% organically in the June quarter against 22% reported24, so little of that growth was bought.

If commercial aerospace and defense together fall below 10% of sales while both still grow organically, they will simply have been outgrown by AI; the moat here would be threatened only by organic declines in a year when aircraft production rises.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Defense +24% and commercial air +21% organic in Q2 2026.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Commercial aerospace share of sales, latest quarter
4% (Q2 2026), from 5% for 2025

The weight of the stickiest programmes; organic decline in a year of rising aircraft output would signal lost positions.
