⚠ A Record Margin Built on One MarketModerate threat
Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat
Amphenol's record 29.5% margin rests on AI data-centre products and an $80 million tariff refund, and both can go away.
The margin that broke out of its decade-long band did so for reasons that can reverse. Gross margin was 32.5% in 2023, 33.8% in 2024 and 36.9% in 20251, and 40.5% in the June 2026 quarter2, on gross profit of $3,548.0 million from sales of $8,758.1 million3.
Look at where the extra points come from. The Communications Solutions segment, home of the data-centre products, earned a 33.6% margin in the quarter against 30.6% a year earlier4. The chief executive said that sequential growth of 22% was driven "virtually all" by AI: "Virtually all of this growth was driven by sales of AI related products"5. Some of the rest is a one-off. The quarter included "an $80 million ($0.04 per share) net benefit related to the recovery of IEEPA tariffs"6, about 0.9 points of margin7, and the company said its guidance "does not include any additional tariff recoveries"8.
A margin built on one product family behaves like that family. When AI customers slow their building, the mix that lifted the margin will reverse it. The old businesses, which ran at about 20% for a decade, will still be there; the question is how much of the new margin they can hold. The first quarter showed how much the adjusted and GAAP figures can differ in a year of deals. Its GAAP operating margin was 24.0% and its adjusted margin 27.3%9.
The quarter to watch is the first one in which IT datacom sales fall sequentially. If gross margin in that quarter drops below 36%, the 2025 level, the record will have been a boom and not a new floor.
