The MoatWide moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
Amphenol has no monopoly, only 4.6% of its market; its moat is a federation of more than 140 managers that earned 15% to 20% on capital every year for a decade.
Amphenol's moat is not a product. It sells connectors, cable, antennas and sensors that the 10-K says compete on "technology innovation, product quality and performance, price, customer service and delivery time"1, against thirteen named rivals and many others2. By its own estimate the market for such products was about $500 billion in 20253, so its $23,094.7 million of sales4 was about 4.6% of it5. Nobody with 4.6% of a market has a monopoly.
What it has is a way of running the business. More than 140 general managers each own a niche and its profit6, the centre is cheap, and bought businesses slot in as new units. The result is a return on invested capital that stayed between 14.8% and 19.9% from 2015 to 2024 and was 27.9% in 20257, against a cost of capital estimated at 10.35%8. Ten years of returns nearly twice the cost of capital, through a flat year, a pandemic and a down year, is the evidence.
Four facets carry it. The General Manager System is the organisation. Buying Businesses and Running Them Better is the acquisition record. Many Markets, No Master is the breadth across end markets. Cash Without Much Capital is the financial result.
Two things have changed in 2026. The AI data-centre market has lifted margins above anything in the record, 29.5% in the June 2026 quarter9, and made one segment the source of two-thirds of the profit10. And the CommScope purchase has added $13.4 billion of net debt11 and a business that did not grow up in the system.
The engineering is where the moat starts. Design teams at the business units work with customers on new products, "which often results in the Company obtaining approved vendor status for its customers' new products and programs"12, and the company aims its research at products with "significant sales within a one- to three-year period"13. It owns many patents, but says its position does not depend on "the loss of any single patent or group of related patents"14. The protection is a relationship renewed product by product, not a legal wall.
The returns were not bought with borrowed money. Net debt was $3,550.7 million at the end of 202415, about 1.1 times that year's operating income16, before the CommScope financing took it to $13.4 billion17. Ten years of returns of 15% to 20% on invested capital came from the businesses, not from leverage.
The 2025 return is flattered: the year-end balance sheet held $11.1 billion of cash raised for CommScope but not yet spent18. The moat is wide. What would falsify it is the return on capital with CommScope fully counted: below 15% for 2026 or 2027 would mean the system had stopped earning more than the price of what it buys.
ROIC 27.9% in 2025 (flattered by pre-deal cash); margin 29.5% in Q2 2026.
The whole moat in one figure; below 15% in 2026 or 2027 with CommScope counted would mean the system no longer earns its purchases.
