More Than 140 General ManagersWide moat
Amphenol (APH) — moat facet
Amphenol runs more than 140 separate businesses with their own general managers, and that federation, not any single product, is the core of the moat.
Amphenol is not one connector company but more than a hundred, each with its own boss and its own profit and loss. The 10-K puts it in one sentence: the company operates "with more than 140 general managers running unique, independent businesses"1. Each of them "operates in a flat organizational structure and is enabled and incented to grow and develop their business, with the support of the resources of the larger organization"2. Above them sit three segment managers, each reporting directly to the chief executive3.
The count is disclosed every year, which lets a reader watch the structure stretch. It was about 120 in the 2020 filing4, about 130 in the 2021 to 2023 filings56, about 140 in 20247 and more than 140 in 20258. Sales grew much faster than the count. Net sales per general manager were about $71.7 million in 2020 and at most $165.0 million in 20259, because 2025 sales of $23,094.7 million10 were spread over little more than 140 people.
Why does this matter to an owner? A connector is a small part of a customer's product, designed in by an engineer who wants an answer this week. A manager who owns one niche, and is paid on it, can give that answer without a committee. The company names the result itself: it believes the structure gives each manager "a more direct link to the success of their individual businesses"11. Even the computer systems are split: each business unit "utilizes a separate and distinct information technology system"12.
The same design explains the acquisition record argued under Buying Businesses and Running Them Better. A bought company can be slotted in as one more general manager's business, without rebuilding the head office around it. The language has barely changed in six years. The 2020 filing described "approximately 120 general managers running unique businesses"13; the 2025 filing says more than 14014. What has changed is what each of them runs.
What could undo this is size. Sales per general manager more than doubled in five years15. If the next filing shows the count stuck near 140 while sales per manager pass $200 million, the federation will have become a handful of large divisions wearing the old name.
About 120 general managers in 2020, more than 140 in 2025.
How far each business has grown; above $200M with the count flat would mean the federation is turning into divisions.
