Amphenol (APH) — moat facet

Amphenol held its operating margin between 19.1% and 20.7% for ten years, including a flat year and a down year, which is what a disciplined federation of small businesses looks like.

The clearest evidence that the general-manager system works is a margin that refused to move. Amphenol's GAAP operating margin was 19.8% in 2015, 19.2% in 2016, 20.4% in 2017, 20.6% in 2018, 19.7% in 2019, 19.1% in 2020, 19.4% in 2021, 20.5% in 2022, 20.4% in 2023 and 20.7% in 20241. Ten years inside a band of 1.6 points.

Ten years in a 1.6-point band, then a jump.

Those were not ten good years. Sales rose only 0.3% in 20192, from $8,202.0 million to $8,225.4 million3, and the margin held at 19.7%. In 2023 sales fell 0.5%4, from $12,623.0 million to $12,554.7 million56, and the margin was 20.4%. A company with one factory and one product cannot do that; when volume stops, fixed costs eat the margin. A company made of many small businesses, each told to protect its own income statement, can cut where demand has fallen and keep spending where it has not.

What the band does not show is pricing power. A connector maker earning 20% on sales for a decade is earning a steady toll, not raising it. The 10-K lists price among the grounds of competition, alongside "technology innovation, product quality and performance" and "customer service and delivery time"7.

Then the band broke upward. The margin was 25.4% in 20258 and 29.5% in the June 2026 quarter9, against 25.1% a year earlier10. That is the AI data-centre business, examined on Communications Solutions and on A Record Margin Built on One Market, not the old model getting better at its old job.

Growth did not lift the margin either, which is the other half of the record. In 2021, when sales rose 26.5%11, from $8,598.9 million to $10,876.3 million12, the margin was 19.4%13. For ten years the system held its margin through bad years and did not expand it in good ones, which says the price of its products was set by competition, not by Amphenol. That is what makes 2025 unusual.

The decade's claim will be tested in the next down year. If sales fall and the GAAP operating margin drops below 19%, the floor that held from 2015 to 2024 will have been a feature of those years rather than of the company.

Moat trajectory: Widening

25.4% in 2025 and 29.5% in Q2 2026, above the old band.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
GAAP operating margin, latest quarter
29.5% (Q2 2026), from 25.1% a year earlier

The margin the decade said was the floor; below 19% in a down year would break the record.
