⚠ Forty-Three Percent in One MarketHigh threat
Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat
IT datacom went from 19% of Amphenol's sales in 2023 to 43% in mid-2026, so the margin, the backlog and the multiple now all depend on data-centre budgets.
The biggest threat to Amphenol is the source of its best results. IT datacom was about 19% of sales in 20191, 21% in 2020, 2021 and 202223, 19% in 20234 and 24% in 20245. Then it jumped: 36% in 20256, 38% in the fourth quarter7 and 43% in the June 2026 quarter8.
The company is clear about what drives it. The 10-K says the market's growth "will be dependent upon many factors, including our go-forward market share for such products, the demand for our customers' products and services, the amount and mix of capital spending by our customers"9. It also warns that "Periodic downturns" can lead customers to cancel or delay orders10.
The concentration now runs through everything. It lifted the operating margin to 29.5% in the June quarter11; it put 67.3% of segment profit in one segment12; it drove the backlog to $8.9 billion13; and it is why the shares trade at about 40 times earnings14. A slowdown in data-centre spending would reach all four at once.
Amphenol has lived through the collapse of a large market before. Mobile devices went from 15% of sales in 2020 to 4% by mid-20261516, and the company kept growing because the rest of its markets were large enough. With IT datacom at 43%, the rest is only 57%.
The applications are listed plainly. The 10-K says IT datacom sales went into "AI", servers, cloud computing, storage systems, data centres, transmission and networking equipment17. In the fourth quarter of 2025 the market grew 110% in dollars and organically18. The backlog tells the same story: it rose to $8.9 billion, and the increase "was primarily related to strong demand for the Company's products that support AI" applications19.
Management sees it as a franchise rather than a boom. The chief executive said "The revolution in AI has no doubt created a unique opportunity for Amphenol given our leading high-speed, fiber optic and power interconnect solutions"20. He may be right; the point is that the company's results now depend on his being right. In dollars IT datacom was about $3.8 billion in the quarter21, more than the whole company's average quarterly sales in 201922. IT datacom was 38% of sales in the fourth quarter of 202523, so its share rose five points in two quarters.
The company expects another mid-teens sequential rise in the September quarter24. If IT datacom instead falls more than 10% from its peak quarter, and total sales fall with it, the concentration will have become the company's cycle.
The concentration in one number; above 50% would make Amphenol a data-centre supplier with a diversified tail.
