◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Amphenol (APH) — the variant view
The market pays about 40 times earnings for margins of 27% to 30% that the company never reached before 2025; at its decade's average margin, operating income would be a quarter lower.
📈 APH valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market is paying close to the decade's highest multiple for the highest margins the company has recorded, and it is treating both as permanent. At $83.14 on 28 September 2026 Amphenol was worth $205.02 billion, 42.07 times trailing earnings per share and 7.03 times sales12. On market value over net income the multiple is about 39.93. At the end of 2015 it was about 21.1, and at the end of 2022 about 23.84.
The earnings beneath it are the best the company has recorded. Operating margin was between 19.1% and 20.7% in every year from 2015 to 20245; it was 25.4% in 20256 and 29.5% in the June 2026 quarter7. Trailing operating income to June 2026 was about $7.8 billion on sales of $29.0 billion, a 27.0% margin8.
What the price may be missing is the history. If the margin went back to the decade's average of about 20% on the same sales, operating income would be about $5.8 billion9, a quarter less. Nothing in the business requires that; but nothing in a component supplier's history guarantees a margin set during a surge in demand. Amphenol's own list of competitive grounds includes price and delivery time10, and delivery time is worth most when supply is short.
The forward view is kinder. The forward multiple is 28.4811, which implies earnings of about $2.92 a share, 46% above the trailing $2.0012. Analysts' average target is $99.3913.
Other measures say the same thing. The shares traded at 22.97 times enterprise value to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, 43.27 times free cash flow and 13.38 times book value14. They rose 36.28% over fifty-two weeks15, within a range of $59.01 to $89.2616. None of these is extreme for a company growing at 50%; all of them assume the growth continues.
The long record explains the confidence. Amphenol's market value has grown at a compound 23.45% a year since December 199817, and from $16.10 billion at the end of 2015 to $205.02 billion now18. Owners have been rewarded for paying up before. The question is whether they are now paying for margins rather than for the system that earned the record.
The market is right that the business is excellent; ten years of returns show that. It may be underweighting how much of today's price assumes today's margin. If the operating margin falls below 25% in any quarter while sales still grow, the multiple will be resting on a margin that no longer exists.
