✦ Defense After TrexonNarrow moat

Amphenol (APH) — the future bets

Amphenol spent about $3 billion on CIT and Trexon to deepen its defense business, and defense sales grew 24% organically in the June 2026 quarter.

The quieter bet in Amphenol's portfolio is on defense spending. Defense was 8% of sales in the June 2026 quarter, and "Sales grew from prior year by a robust 37% in U.S. dollars, and 24% organically"1, with growth "across nearly all areas of the defense market"2.

Defense grew faster than commercial air, much of it bought.

Amphenol has paid to widen its position. It bought Trexon for $1,050.3 million in 2025, adding "high-reliability interconnect and cable assembly capabilities, primarily for the defense market"3, and CIT in 2024 for about $1,995.3 million4, which the company said would serve "the commercial air, defense and industrial markets"5. In the June 2026 quarter it added El.Com, an Italian maker of interconnect solutions and high-voltage cable assemblies with sales of about $150 million, serving industrial, defense and commercial aerospace markets6.

Defense is a good market for the system: long programmes, qualified parts and customers who value reliability over price. It also sits largely in Harsh Environment Solutions, whose margin was 30.1% in the June quarter7 against 26.2% for 20258.

The bet is also a hedge. Defense spending does not move with data-centre budgets, so a larger defense business softens the company's dependence on AI.

The share of sales has not risen, because IT datacom grew faster. Defense was 12% of sales in 20199, 11% in 202410, 9% in 202511 and 8% in the June 2026 quarter12. The purchases have kept the business growing in dollars; they have not made it a larger part of the company. That is fine for a hedge, which needs to be large enough to matter only when AI slows. In 2025, three of the five acquisitions went into Harsh Environment Solutions13, where defense sits. Defense was 9% of 2025 sales14. Defense grew 24% organically in the June quarter, the second-fastest organic rate after IT datacom15.

If defense organic growth falls below 10% while the acquired businesses are still being counted, the purchases will have bought a larger share of a slowing market rather than a stake in a growing one.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Defense +37% in dollars, +24% organic in Q2 2026.

Whether the defense purchases are riding a growing market; below 10% organic would mean they bought share of a slowing one.
