⚠ A Boom Eats Working CapitalLow threat
Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat
Amphenol's free cash flow fell to 68% of net income in its fastest-growing quarter, as the boom tied up cash in stock and receivables.
The same boom that raised Amphenol's profits has started to slow its cash. In the June 2026 quarter net income attributable to the company was $1,769.2 million1; operating cash flow was $1,557.2 million and capital spending $355.5 million2, leaving free cash flow of about $1.2 billion, 68% of net income3.
That is not alarming on its own. A business whose sales rose 55% in a year4 has to buy more materials and wait for more customers to pay, and the cash comes later. Amphenol's history shows it does come: free cash flow was 112.0% of net income in 2023, a year when sales fell slightly5.
The risk is in how long the boom lasts. Each quarter of rapid growth leaves more money in inventory and receivables, and if demand turns, the company holds stock made for orders that no longer come. The 10-K warns that downturns can lead "customers canceling, delaying, reducing or otherwise modifying their purchase commitments"6, and unfilled orders "may generally be cancelled prior to shipment of goods"7.
The company also has more competing calls on cash than before. Interest expense in the first half of 2026 was $421.6 million against $157.4 million a year earlier8, and capital spending in the second half may be "modestly higher" than the usual 3% to 4% of sales9. The balance sheet shows the build. Receivables were $6,790.1 million at 30 June 2026, against $4,717.1 million six months earlier10.
Free cash flow below 75% of net income in the second half of 2026, with sales growth slowing, would mean the cash tied up in the boom was not coming back as quickly as the history suggests.
