⚠ China: Thirteen Percent of Sales, Thirty-Seven Percent of the PlantHigh threat

Amphenol (APH) — threat to the moat

Amphenol cut China to 12.7% of its sales while raising it to 37% of its long-lived assets, making its AI products in a country whose government can restrict or tax them.

Amphenol has done two opposite things with China, and the combination is the risk. Its Chinese sales fell from 31.6% of the total in 2018 to 15.9% in 2025 and 12.7% in the June 2026 quarter1. Its long-lived assets moved the other way: at the end of 2025, 79% were outside the United States "with approximately 37% located in China", against 73% and 29% a year earlier2.

Eight points more of the plant in China in one year.

The company explains the build-out: "These increases relate primarily to the significant investments the Company has made to support sales of its AI-related products"3. Long-lived assets in China rose from $617.9 million to $1,050.4 million in 20254, 70.0% in a year5. Much of the new plant for its AI products is in China, while most of the buyers are elsewhere.

That leaves the company exposed from both sides. China has added certain U.S. companies to its "Unreliable Entity List"6. The United States restricts exports of advanced-computing products7. And China's tax authorities have taken a harder look: charges of $100.0 million in the fourth quarter of 20258 and $290.0 million of discrete tax items in the first quarter of 2026, $130.0 million and $160.0 million of them related to China9. Cash taxes paid in China were $579.5 million in 2025, more than half the total1011, a point argued on Half the Tax Bill Is Paid in China.

So far the rules have not hurt: "to date, none of such restrictions have had a material adverse effect"12. But a plant cannot be moved as quickly as a sales mix.

The build-up is recent. Long-lived assets in China were $244.7 million in 2017 and $343.1 million in 201913, $455.5 million in 202314, $617.9 million in 2024 and $1,050.4 million in 202515. As a share of all long-lived assets China was 28.7% in 2019 and 28.2% in 202316, steady for years, before the AI build-out took it to about 37%17. The June 2026 quarter widened the gap. Chinese sales rose 26.2%, to $1,113.0 million, while American sales rose 76.2%1819. The company has not put a figure on what a restriction would cost. Its own measure of the exposure is where the plant stands, and that measure has risen for two years.

If China's share of long-lived assets rises above 40% while its share of sales stays near an eighth, Amphenol will be making more of its most profitable products in a country whose government can tax, restrict or list it.

The number that tests this threat
Reported
China share of long-lived assets, year end
about 37% (2025), from 29% in 2024

How much of the plant sits under one government; above 40% with China near an eighth of sales would deepen the mismatch.
