Amphenol (APH) — moat facet

No customer reaches 10% of Amphenol's sales, but 43% now comes from one market whose buyers go unnamed and whose orders can be cancelled.

Amphenol's customer list looks diversified and is becoming less so. On revenue, the record is clean: "No single customer accounted for 10% or more of the Company's net sales" in 2023, 2024 or 20251, and none did in 2021 or 202223. The company sells to "thousands of original equipment manufacturers"4, to contract manufacturers and to distributors.

Four-fifths of sales go direct or through contract manufacturers.

The channel split confirms the breadth. In 2025, $18,797.5 million went to end customers and contract manufacturers and $4,297.2 million to distributors and resellers5. In 2023 the figures were $10,462.2 million and $2,092.5 million6.

Two things complicate the picture, and this page keeps them apart. The first is market concentration. IT datacom, driven by AI data-centre builders, was 43% of sales in the June 2026 quarter7, and Amphenol names none of those buyers. The second is backlog concentration. The backlog was $8.9 billion at the end of 20258; the company gives no split of it by customer or market, only that its growth was "primarily related to strong demand for the Company's products that support AI" applications9.

The four pages below take each piece. No Customer at Ten Percent is the revenue record. The Buyers Behind Forty-Three Percent is the AI concentration. An $8.9 Billion Backlog That Can Be Cancelled is the order book. Distributors: One Dollar in Five is the small-customer base.

The relationships are managed from two directions. Design teams in the business units work with customers' engineers, and the company also "uses key account managers to manage certain customer relationships on a global basis so that it can bring to bear its total resources to meet the worldwide needs of its multinational customers"10. To serve high-volume buyers it has "established facilities near these major customers"11, a commitment that makes it harder for either side to walk away. The receivables show the customer base paying on time. Days sales outstanding were 66 at the end of 2025, against 68 a year earlier12, and receivables were $6,790.1 million at 30 June 202613.

The customer base has also moved toward the United States. Sales shipped there were 39.0% of the June 2026 quarter, against 34.3% a year earlier14, and among the service providers the company names as customers are "telecommunications network service providers and web service providers"15. A data-centre builder is a web service provider in this language. The largest customer's share was last disclosed at about 11% in 202016. Since then sales have grown 2.7 times17 without a customer of that size reappearing.

The customer base is wide on revenue and narrowing in substance. If any single customer reaches 10% of sales, or IT datacom passes half, the diversified base that made the margin record will have become a dependence on a few buyers' capital budgets.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

IT datacom 43% of sales in Q2 2026; backlog concentration undisclosed.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Sales to end customers and contract manufacturers, full year
$18,797.5M (2025), 81.4% of net sales

The direct base; its share rising above 85% would mean distributors and small customers counted for less.
