XTBThin moat
XTB — overall economic moat
XTB sells the right to bet on things it does not own, and it takes the other side of the bet.
A client in Warsaw or Madrid or Santiago opens an account, deposits money, and buys a contract for difference on gold. No gold changes hands, and no exchange stands between the two parties. XTB writes the contract, quotes the price and holds the opposite position, so it pays when the client is right and keeps the money when the client is wrong. The company describes this plainly: it "operates as a market-maker, meaning it is the counterparty to a client's transaction".1 Of the 11 712 million złoty of derivative notional on its books at the end of June 2026, transactions with outside brokers were 8 per cent.2 The rest is XTB against its own customers.
Almost all the money comes from there. The group's gross gain on financial instruments in 2025 was 2 113 million złoty, of which contracts for difference produced 2 035 million, or 96 per cent.3 Commodities were the largest class at 924 million, indices 761 million, currencies 290 million. Buying actual shares and exchange-traded funds, the thing a broker is usually understood to do, produced 78 million.
What makes this business hard to read is that revenue and activity are close to unrelated. XTB publishes both numbers every quarter: how much its clients traded, and how much it earned per unit of that trading. Across the eight quarters to June 2026 the volume of contracts moved by a factor of 1,6 and the profit on each one by a factor of 3,2, from 152 złoty a lot in the third quarter of 2025 to 484 in the second quarter of 2026.4 Trading volume explains almost none of the variation in revenue and the margin per contract explains nearly all of it. The clearest illustration is the most recent one: in the first half of 2026 operating income rose 79,7 per cent while the number of contracts traded fell 1,8 per cent.5 Clients did slightly less; the house made almost twice as much.
By every other measure the company is growing quickly. Total clients went from 149 300 at the end of 2019 to 2 164 900 at the end of 2025 and 2 825 700 six months after that.6 Net deposits were 14 672 million złoty in 2025.7 Clients hold 43 364 million złoty of shares and exchange-traded funds in their XTB accounts, more than twice what the whole company is worth, and 7 125 million of cash beside it.8 The awkward figure sits next to those: average operating revenue per active client fell from 7 400 złoty in 2020 to 1 800 in 2025.9
Growth is bought, and the price shows in the income statement. Marketing cost 585 million złoty in 2025, up 69,6 per cent, and is now the largest expense in the company at 27 per cent of revenue.10 In 2019 the largest expense was wages.11 Operating income rose 14,6 per cent to 2 146 million while operating expenses rose 48,2 per cent to 1 314 million, and a 93 million unrealised currency loss on the balance sheet took most of what survived, so net profit fell 24,8 per cent to 644 million.12 Then the first half of 2026 produced 1 027 million on its own, more than the whole of the previous year, on a commodities market that happened to move.13
XTB is Polish, listed in Warsaw since 2016, licensed by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority since 2005 and passported into fourteen other countries.14 It employs 1 516 people.15 Poland alone was 54 per cent of 2025 revenue and 57 per cent of the first half of 2026, which means the international expansion is adding clients faster than it is adding money.16
At 149,90 złoty the shares are worth about 17 620 million, or 14 times the last twelve months of earnings. That is not a demanding multiple, and it should not be: the twelve months in question contain the best two quarters this company has ever had. The number to watch is profitability per lot. When it returns to the 152 it printed in the third quarter of 2025, so does everything else.17 Its five instrument classes are taken in turn in The Revenue Lines.
Total operating income was 2 146 million złoty in 2025 and 2 086 million in the first half of 2026 alone. Inside it, gross gain on financial instruments was 2 113 million, of which contracts for difference produced 2 035 million and cash shares and exchange-traded funds 78 million. Commodities were the largest class at 924 million. The rebrand from trading to investing has not yet reached the income statement. Watch the share produced by instruments other than contracts for difference: 4,0 per cent in the first half of 2026.
Source: XTB Group consolidated annual report for 2025 ↗A contract for difference is closed in a second and the cash is wired out the same week, so switching costs score 3 and rest almost entirely on the tax wrappers and the 43 364 million złoty of custody rather than on anything in the trading business. There is no network effect worth the name - a client gains nothing from other clients being present - so network scores 2. Pricing power is 3: XTB quotes the only price its client sees, which is real, but it competes on posted spreads it advertises as among the lowest available and charges no commission on shares below EUR 100 000 of turnover. Replication scores 4 for the licence, the nine supervisory relationships and a proprietary platform carrying 91 per cent of turnover - genuinely hard to assemble, and assembled by a dozen rivals already. Disruption resistance is 3: the product has been narrowed by regulation once, and the firms taking the savings customer can price dealing at zero because trading is a seventh of their revenue. Durability of 4 sits at the top of the thin band because the returns are excellent and unrepeatable - return on equity has cleared any sensible hurdle in all seven disclosed years, at a low of 12 per cent and a high of 63, and the variable that decides it is the volatility of gold.
