KLA (KLAC) — threat to the moat

The seven-times lead is KLA's own figure, so the evidence for it has to come from margins and growth, not from the slide.

The weakest link in the case for KLA is that its central number is self-reported. The "approximately 7x" figure comes from the chief executive on an earnings call1, and KLA's 10-K contains no market share at all. It says instead that KLA has many competitors, "some of which may have greater financial, research, engineering, manufacturing and marketing resources than we have"2.

One down year in eleven, FY2024.

The public rankings that exist measure something else. They rank equipment makers by total sales, where KLA sits among the five largest3, and say nothing about process control alone.

A self-reported share is not a false one. But an investor paying 51.3 times trailing earnings4 is paying for a lead measured by the company that benefits from the measurement.

The company also claims leads in specific categories. Wallace said on the March 2026 call that KLA's share improved in optical pattern wafer inspection and electron beam inspection5. Each such claim adds to the picture, but none is independently measured in anything this page could read.

The whole-industry rankings that are public put KLA fifth among equipment makers, as TechInsights did for 20216; they measure total equipment sales, not the process control share KLA claims.

The practical check is behaviour rather than claims. Process control revenue grew 12% in fiscal 20267, and total revenue has fallen in only one fiscal year since 20158. If KLA's systems revenue grew more slowly than wafer fab equipment spending for two years while the seven-times claim stayed on the slides, the claim would be the thing to doubt.
