An Eighty-Seven Percent Return on EquityWide moat

KLA (KLAC) — moat facet

KLA earns 87% on its equity because buybacks shrank the equity, and 46% on all its capital because the franchise is that good.

KLA's return on equity is a product of its buybacks as much as its business. Net income of $4,830.8 million on average shareholders' equity of about $5,521 million gives a return of 87.5%1; stockanalysis reports the same 87.50%2. In fiscal 2025 it was about 100.8%3.

Above 87% for three years.

The equity is small because KLA has handed back most of what it earned. Retained earnings were only $3,683.9 million at the end of fiscal 20264, after eleven years in which KLA bought back $15.33 billion of stock and paid $9.79 billion of dividends56.

A better measure of the business is return on invested capital, which counts debt as well. By the repo method it was 46.4% in fiscal 2026, against 13.0% in fiscal 20157, and that calculation understates it, because the $3.25 billion of marketable securities are not deducted8.

Either way the returns are high, and that is the moat showing in the accounts. A business without pricing power could not earn 46% on its capital through a cycle.

Retained earnings have been rebuilt quickly. They were $2,179.3 million at June 2025 and $3,683.9 million at June 20269, as net income of $4,830.8 million10 exceeded what was paid out of them. Equity will keep growing unless KLA returns more than it earns.

The ratio has stayed extreme through the cycle. Return on equity was about 87.9% in fiscal 2024, the downturn year11, and 100.77% in fiscal 2025 by stockanalysis's count12. A figure that barely moves when profit falls 18% is measuring the equity base as much as the business.

Return on invested capital tells the Orbotech story. It fell from 33.4% in fiscal 2018 to 21.7% in fiscal 2020 as the purchase doubled invested capital, then climbed back to 46.7% by fiscal 202213.

Equity was $4,692.5 million at June 2025 and $6,349.8 million at June 202614, the base behind the 87.5%.

The equity figure will keep flattering the ratio as long as buybacks continue. Return on invested capital is the one to follow: below 30% for a full year would say the franchise, not the buybacks, had changed.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

ROIC 46.4% in FY2026, 46.3% in FY2025.

Flattered by buybacks; read beside return on invested capital, and a fall in both would mean the franchise had weakened.

How it's calculated: Net income ($4,830.8M) divided by the average of shareholders equity at June 2025 ($4,692.5M) and June 2026 ($6,349.8M), KLA Form 10-K FY2026.
