Major ClientsNarrow moat
KLA (KLAC) — moat facet
One customer takes about a fifth of KLA's revenue, and the $12.6 billion backlog carries no disclosure of who placed it.
KLA sells to very few companies, and it says so. Its risk list includes "our vulnerability to a highly concentrated customer base"1, and the 10-K explains why: "Our customer base is concentrated due to corporate consolidations, acquisitions and business closures"2.
Revenue concentration and backlog concentration have to be read separately, because KLA discloses one and not the other.
On revenue, one customer took about 19% in each of fiscal 2025 and 2026, and the 10-K names TSMC as the only customer above 10% from fiscal 2024 to 20263. In the March 2026 quarter two customers took 19% and 11%4. The largest customer's share has moved between 13% and 23% for a decade56, and the names have changed: Intel, Samsung and Micron have all been above 10% at some point7.
On the order book, KLA reports a backlog of $12.57 billion, up from $7.86 billion8, but not who placed it. Its disclosed remaining performance obligations are only $1,775.1 million9. So the concentration of future revenue cannot be read from the filings at all.
By country, 87% of revenue ships outside the United States10, and China and Taiwan together were 56.6% of fiscal 2026 revenue11.
The four pages below take the parts: TSMC, the largest; Samsung, a large customer that fell below the line; the backlog and what it does and does not bind; and China's domestic chipmakers.
The concentration shows in receivables too. Two customers each held more than 10% of KLA's receivables at the end of fiscal 202512, and in the quarter to March 2026 three customers did13. In fiscal 2019 the customers above that line were TSMC and SK hynix14, a reminder that the names change even when the concentration does not.
The disclosed concentration has, if anything, become simpler. In fiscal 2015 three customers took 15%, 12% and 11% of revenue15, 38% between them16; in fiscal 2023 two took 18% and 15%17; in fiscal 2026 one took about 19%18. Fewer names cross the line, and the largest has stayed near a fifth.
The customer base is narrow. The number to watch is the largest customer's share: above 25% in a year would mean KLA's fortunes had become one company's capital plan.
Largest customer about 19% in FY2025 and FY2026.
Concentration on one buyer; above 25% would make KLA a supplier to one capital plan.
