A Share Count Down 29%Narrow moat
Lam Research (LRCX) — moat facet
Lam has retired 29% of its shares since fiscal 2015, which turned an 11-fold rise in profit into a 15-fold rise in earnings per share.
Lam returns most of its cash by buying back its own stock, and the share count shows it. Diluted shares fell from about 1,770.7 million in fiscal 2015, adjusted for the ten-for-one split of October 202412, to 1,261.1 million in fiscal 20263, a decline of 28.8%4.
The buybacks are large and steady. Lam spent $3,851.3 million on its own shares in fiscal 2026, $3,422.3 million in fiscal 2025 and $2,842.8 million in fiscal 20245. In May 2024 the board authorised another $10.00 billion, of which about $4.04 billion was left at the end of fiscal 20266.
The effect on earnings per share is direct. Net income rose 11.1 times from fiscal 2015 to fiscal 2026, and diluted earnings per share, split-adjusted, rose from $0.37 to $5.76789, about 15.6 times10.
Treasury stock at cost has reached $31.6 billion, against retained earnings of $34.95 billion11, about nine-tenths as much12.
The pace continued after the year ended. Shares outstanding were 1,251,424,362 on 4 September 202613, fewer than the 1,261.1 million diluted average of fiscal 202614. BlackRock held 9.41% and Vanguard 7.48%15; no holder controls the company.
The pace has been steady rather than dramatic: diluted shares fell from 1,319.9 million in fiscal 2024 to 1,290.1 million in fiscal 2025 and 1,261.1 million in fiscal 202616, about 2.3% a year17.
Buybacks create value only if the price is below what the shares are worth. The number that tests the programme is the average price paid; Lam's rose from $105.67 in the September 2025 quarter to $370.15 in the last month of fiscal 202618.
Buybacks of $3.85bn in FY2026; $4.04bn authorisation left.
The pace of shrinking the share count; a rise would mean buybacks no longer cover dilution.
