⚠ An Installed Base Lam Does Not CountLow threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Lam's installed-base moat rests on a fleet size and a revenue per chamber that it does not disclose.
The installed-base argument rests on numbers Lam does not publish. It gives no total count of chambers in the field, only the figure of more than 40,000 in conductor etch1, and no revenue per chamber. Management's statement that it has grown the customer support business "faster than the installed base"2 cannot be checked from the filings.
What is published is the line's share of revenue each quarter. Customer support was 33.4% of revenue in the September 2025 quarter, 37.2% in December, 36.1% in March and 36.8% in June 20263. Those are moves in the mix, not a measure of the fleet.
An investor therefore has to take the service economics partly on trust. The segment gross margin of 52.2%45 covers tools and service together, so the profit on parts and service is unknown.
The only published count is the conductor etch figure of "more than 40,000 chambers"6. Lam gives none for deposition or clean, where the installed base is also large and the service revenue flows from the same kind of chamber.
Better disclosure would settle the question. Until then, the test is simple: customer support revenue should grow in every year in which Lam ships more tools than it did two years earlier, because those tools join the fleet. A year in which it does not would say the fleet is earning less per chamber.
