⚠ Customer Support Can Lag a BoomLow threat
Lam Research (LRCX) — threat to the moat
Customer support fell from 40% to 36% of Lam's revenue because new-tool sales grew faster, which makes the business more cyclical in a boom.
In a boom the installed-base business looks smaller. Customer support was 40.1% of revenue in fiscal 2024 and 35.9% in fiscal 20261, not because it shrank but because systems revenue grew faster: 29.5% against 20.2% in fiscal 20262.
That matters for how the moat is valued. A company whose revenue is increasingly new tools is more exposed to the next downturn, however strong its service business.
It also means today's record tools become tomorrow's service base. The strong systems year of fiscal 2026 should feed customer support for years, if Lam keeps the service work.
The same thing happened in the fiscal 2021 upswing, when systems revenue grew 47.4% against 42.2% for customer support3 and the support share slipped to 33.2%4. Two years later, in fiscal 2023, support revenue was growing while systems fell5.
The number to follow is customer support revenue two years after a boom. If fiscal 2028 customer support has not grown in line with the fiscal 2026 tool shipments, the service revenue from those chambers went to others.
